From the Newspaper:
KYU SAKAMOTO (Capitol)
HOME TOWN: Kawasaki, Japan. AGE: 22
BACKGROUND: Kyu (pronounced "Q") has been a
big star in Japan for almost four years,
racking up eight best selling albums and 15
hit singles in that time, as well as acting
in movies and television appearances. When
Washington state disk jockey Rich Osborne
(KORD) played a track from a Toshiba LP for
his audience recently, entitled "Ue O Mui Te
Aruko" the response was so favourable that
the disk was soon one of the most popular in
Washington State. Capitol Records, the U.S.
associate of Toshiba decided to release it in
this country, but changed the name to
"Sukiyaki."
The Lyrics:
Looking up while walking
Ue wo muite arukou
So the tears won't fall
Namida ga koborenai youni
Remebering those spring days
Omoidasu haru no hi
All alone at night
Hitoribocchi no yoru
Looking up while walking
Ue wo muite arukou
And counting the scattered stars
Nijinda hoshi wo kazoete
Remembering those summer days
Omoidasu natsu no hi
All alone at night
Hitoribocchi no yoru
Happiness lies above the clouds
Shiawase wa kumo no ue ni
Happiness lies above the sky
Shiawase wa sora no ue ni
Looking up while walking
Ue wo muite arukou
So the tears won't fall
Namida ga koborenai youni
Keep walking on, while crying
Naki nagara aruku
It's a lonely night
Hitoribocchi no yoru
Omoidasu aki no hi
Remembering those autumn days
Sadness is in the shadow of the stars
Kanashimi wa hoshi no kage ni
Sadness is in the shadow of the moon
Kanashimi wa tsuki no kage ni
Looking up while walking
Ue wo muite arukou
So the tears won't fall
Namida ga koborenai youni
Keep walking on, while crying
Naki nagara aruku
It's a lonely night
Hitoribocchi no yoru

Rare performance by Sakamoto Kyu in Japanese
Television Special. He made his show business
debut in 1960. His biggest hit, Ue o Muite
Aruko (I Look Up When I Walk; "Sukiyaki" in
the West), was released in Japan in 1961.
After its release in the U.S. in 1963, the
song's earnestness and melodic beauty proved
irresistible despite its incomprehensible
lyrics. Against all odds, on June 15, 1963,
the song ousted Leslie Gore's "It's My Party"
to become the No. 1 popular song in the U.S.
"Sukiyaki" remains the biggest international
hit by a Japanese popular singer. Credit for
the song's popularity also is due to the
music by Hachidai Nakamura and the lyrics by
Rokusuke Ei, who is said to have written this
touching evocation of loneliness after his
heart was broken by the actress Mieko
Nakamura. On august 12, 1985 Sakamoto Kyu was
tragically killed in JAL Flight 123, a 747
bound from Haneda Airport in Tokyo to Osaka.
I first heard the song back in the 60 s when
my aunt s neighbor played the spanish
version Naranjos en Flor or Sukiyaki, many
years passed and I visited Japan for the
first time in 1974.
karaoke was making its debut and I heard the
original Sakamoto s version, I reconized the
melody but the lyrics were unknown to me but
definately it was the same song. Inmediatley
I fall in love with the song and made it my
all times favorite. in 1978 We were
celebrating a sayonara party in Michinoku and
the president of my company came out on stage
and performed the song to our surprize in
perfect Japanese.
It was about 3 years ago when he passed away,
I made a long journey to attend his funeral
and realized that the best way to honored him
was to sing his wedding song in front of his
wife, family and friends...I sang the first
part in japanese then the second part in
spanish bringing tears to everyone including
me. If you read this story please click in
the video response in comments to hear the
original spanish version.
Leslie Gore's "It's My Party" hasta hoy ha
520 personas, hubo 4 sobrevivientes siendo

english translation:
I look up as I walk
So that the tears won't fall
Remembering those those spring days
But I am all alone tonight
I look up as I walk
Counting the stars with tearful eyes
Remembering those summer days
But I am all alone tonight
Happiness lies beyond the clouds
Happiness lies up above the sky
I look up as I walk
So that the tears won't fall
Though the tears well up as I walk
For tonight I'm all alone tonight
Remembering those autumn days
But I am all alone tonight
Sadness lies in the shadow of the stars
Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon
I look up as I walk
So that the tears won't fall
Though the tears well up as I walk
For tonight I'm all alone.
