HIGH GERMANY SUITED and BOOTED - The MALKIES
Alistair Hulett
*****
SUITED and BOOTED - HIGH GERMANY
This Track: A Reflection on Love and War:
Often as not, Love (and Lovers) are the true
Victims of War.
Unfortunately it is often overlooked on all
sides, and more
specifically on both sides when dealing in
matters of
the heart.
The oral Folk Tradition has regularly
produced songs denouncing wars from the point
of view of those most likely to be adversely
affected by them and High Germany is one of
the best of these from late18th Century
England. I learned this song many years ago
from a live recording of Frankie Armstrong
and Louis Killen.

Thus song dates back to the 18th Century and
High Germany is the old name used in England
at that time for Bavaria and Southern
Germany. The dialect of Southern Germany is
still known as High German today, while in
the North they speak Low German. Believed to
date from the Seven Year War of the 1720s (if
not earlier). In any instance it is a
fascinating window into the History of the
area and the Music as well. (Alistair Hulett)

HIGH GERMANY - Alistair Hulett of "The
Malkies"
Capo at 3rd fret (Key Cm)
Am G Am Em D G Am
Oh come my dearest Polly now the war it has
begun
Am D Em7
And I must march along by the beating of the
drum
Am C Em7
Go dress your self all in your best and come
along with me
Am C Em Am G Am
I will take thee to the wars, my love, in
High Germany
I'll buy my Polly a pony and on it she shall
ride
I'll buy my Polly a pony to ride up by my
side
We'll stop at every alehouse and we'll drink
when we get dry
We'll be true to one another and get married
bye and bye
And when we get to Plymouth town a bed for
you I'll have
That shall be covered in roses and the roses
shall be red
And when our baby it is born and smiling on
your knee
You will think of lovely William in High
Germany
Oh cursed be the cruel wars that ever they
should rise
And out of merry England press many a man
likewise
They took my husband from me and all my
brothers three
And they sent them to the cruel wars in High
Germany
