Suzanne Teuber, M.D., Associate Professor, UC
Davis School of Medicine provides an overview
of the main issues in food processing as it
relates to food allergy. Dr. Teuber
describes some of the issues that physicians
deal with, as well as the need for consumer
awareness. This presentation was part of a
UC Division of Agriculture and Natural
Resources Food Safety Workgroup, to identify
areas in which the safety of California foods
can be enhanced through university research

NASAL ALLERGY - - A Chinese herbal
prescription
To make the prescription effective, you have
to use the right approach.
Conventional wisdom involves identifying a
list of irritants such as pollens, dust, even
your pets that you are allergic to. This is
an endless game.
The right approach should be to make your
respiratory system robust enough so that you
won't be irritated by all the environmental
disturbances such as pollens, dust, seasonal
changes, pets' hair, etc. If you don't
believe in this approach, just look at other
family members or your neighbors. They all
live in the same environment as you. Not all
of them have your allergies. Why? The reason
is your own internal weakness, especially
your respiratory system.
An effective herbal prescription should
strengthen your respiratory system, and
reduce your allergy symptoms at the same

1) To strengthen your respiratory system,
use:
Bai Bu 百 步
Zi Wan 紫 菀
Bai Qian 白 前
Bai Ji 白 及
Bai He 百 合
Jie Geng 桔 梗
2) To reduce your allergy symptoms such as
cough, dry throat, mucus, sneezing, nasal
congestion, headache, even some swelling,
use:
Zhe Bei Mu 浙 貝 母
Zi Su Ye 紫 蘇 葉
Fang Feng 防 風
Jing Jie 京 芥
Xiang Ru 香 筎
Gao Ben 篙 本
A combination of 12 herbs mentioned above
will do.
Drink one to two cups (8 oz each) of herb tea
a day.
Your allergy won't go away in a few days, but
you'll see progress.
Nasal allergy is a seasonal thing. It usually
flares up in early spring or fall.
After taking the herbs, your allergy may
still flare up sometimes, but the frequency
and the intensity will be reduced until
becoming insignificant.
Since the allergy prescription strengthens
your respiratory system, the best time to
take it is before the allergy season to allow
time for the strengthening effect to work.
This is just one formula with countless
variations depending on:
* Severity and nature of the allergy based on
