A favorite of Brel fans, known for its
unabashed romanticism and brutal honesty, The
Song of Old Lovers was written in late 1966
(released early '67), twenty years after
Jacques Brel fell in love with Therese
Michielsen, (Miche,) soon to be his wife.
("vingt ans d'amour") This was perhaps, the
only song Brel wrote at home in a family
setting, according to his daughter France
Brel in her book Brel. His three children
were grown by then, ("chambre sans berceau")
Brel had a horror of the word "vieux" (old)
but in this case, it seems to have mellowed
things out quite a bit. Stunning piano
arrangement by Gerard Jouannest . Direction
by François Rauber
The song is a masterpiece. It was
covered by Judy Collins and translated
poorly by Shuman/Blau for
the movie version of JB is Alive and Well.
