CURTAINS
A Mystery Musical & Choreographer
ROB ASHFORD Part 1
There quiet, unassuming and sometimes shy and
looking at them you wouldn't think they can
control the movement of large groups of
people, no there not Generals, or Captains of
Armies but Choreographers of Dance. They look
like any regular person you might pass in the
street like Peter Parker before he turns into
Spiderman, in fact Rob reminds me of Toby
McGuire.
But in the case of CURTAINS starring DAVID
HYDE PIERCE & DEBBRA MONK the powers and
abilities of choreographer ROB ASHFORD,
depends on the kindness with others, as we
explore the working relationship of the
Choreographer and his Director Scott Ellis as
they interpret the Rupert Holmes and Peter
Stone murder mystery with the music and
lyrics of John Kandor and Fred Ebb.
Rob talks about how many of the numbers
created for the show was a homage's to past
choreographers of the fifties and sixties
like Agnes DeMille, and his idol Jerome
Robbins, who set a tone for what's know as
the Golden Age of Theatre.
But Rob's life from a dancer to
choreographers was like being dropped on to
the MGM Lot in the hey day of Movie Musicals
and told to have fun, especially after
Thoroughly Modern Millie, which he won a
Tony; The Boys From Syracuse, A Funny Thing
Happened On The Way To The Forum, and the
movie Beyond the Sea directed by Kevin Spacey
to name a few.
A good deal of the draw of course is to see
DAVID HYDE PIERCE of FRASIER fame, and in the
New York area alone if you watch back to back
episodes nightly on television, and own all
the DVD box sets of the series like I do he's
a demi god of late night television
characters needed to enjoy life when there's
nothing good on HBO or CINEMAX, which is most
of the time.
When I look at David Hyde Pierce I think of
the cartoon characters of Peabody & Sherman,
I don't know why but I do, if you think about
it he could play either character and then
imagine they morph into the human form of
William Powell in THE THIN MAN detective
series only this is the prequel. Because all
that is missing is a dog named Astor when the
shamus meets up and falls in love with the
perfect Myrna Loy in JILL PACE, and the
making of a great new TV series were the
couple only handles Theatre Mysteries, but
that's another show.
Maybe your not as familiar with DEBRA MONK
the shows co-star but its her talent along
with a remarkable cast that makes the show a
success even before David Hyde-Pearce comes
out, now that's what I call entertainment.
It was the night that I was flipping through
the channels and stopped on a PBS special
were some actress was out dancing and singing
the Radio City Rockettes is when I became a
fan of KAREN ZIEMBA. I soon agreed with
critics that wrote that what ever show she's
been in it hasn't made use of her talent,
well the times come its here and she's
remarkable.
I've written it's been a rough season on
Broadway with very few good looking women, or
dancers to enjoy on stage, so says my alter
E(go)( Males) Mails from most of the men in
New Jersey and Long Island who have to go to
the city on weekends to see a play to make
there creative wives happy.
So rejoice one critic even called some of
Rob Ashford's staging trashy, sadly they
never saw Billy Wilders Irma La Deuce, but
that alone should sell some extra tickets.
Then again wait till you meet up with one of
the hottest, sexist singer dancers you could
ever fall in love with on stage named MEGAN
SIKORA as BAMBI the up coming star-let, well
I'll save that and a Indian dance for part
2.
