| Gotti part 1 of 14 |
 |
John Gotti, the head of a small New York
mafia crew breaks a few of the old family
rules. He rises to become the head of the
Gambino family and the most well-known mafia
boss in America. He is known as the Dapper
Don for his expensive taste in suits, and the
Teflon Don because none of the FBI charges
against him will stick. Life is good, but
suspicion creeps in, and greed, rule-breaking
and his high public profile all threaten to
topple him. Tags : gotti mafia mob new york city irish italian russian crime murder money |

NY KillingsThe Associated PressA federal
judge on Tuesday ordered John A. "Junior"
Gotti held without bail after the man who
insisted he had retired from a life of crime
was arrested on charges linking him to three
killings and large-scale cocaine trafficking.
(Aug. 5)((New York)) It's another
round of the F-B-I versus the Gotti family.
The feds picked up former Gambino
crime family boss John "Junior" Gotti at his
home on Long Island Tuesday morning.
As part of a RICO criminal conspiracy
indictment, he's charged with cocaine
trafficking, jury and witness tampering, and,
most seriously, say prosecutors:
((Robert O Neill, U.S Attorney))
"The murders of three men in Queens and
Manhattan back in the late 1980s and 1990s."
Gotti's lawyer Charles Carnesi
says his client will plead not guilty.
((Charles Carnesi, Defense Lawyer))
"Q: was he ordering these hits? A:
absolutely not, he had nothing to do with
this." "Junior" Gotti is the son
of late Gambino boss John J Gotti, who was
nicknamed the Teflon Don, because of how he
kept beating federal prosecutions. His son
has a similar record: hung juries each of the
last three times the government has put him
on trial. The feds ultimately put Gotti
Senior behind bars for life, and they hope to
do the same with junior, who claims he left
the mafia lifestyle behind in 1998. "The mob
has accepted the fact that he has withdrawn
and now it's just up to the FBI to come
around and reach the reality of it." The new
charges were brought in Tampa, Florida, where
federal agents said the crime family had a
foothold, and where the government has
apparently found some cooperating witnesses.
((Steven Ibison, FBI)) "When you violate the
federal law today, tomorrow or 20 years ago,
the FBI and its law enforcement partners will
pursue the matter to its logical
conclusions." But Gotti's lawyer cast doubt
on any new witnesses. "Why would some nobody
drug dealer in Florida, why would he be
possessed of this information?"In court
Tuesday, a judge ordered Gotti to remain
behind bars until he's transferred to
Florida. Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press,
