| TVC Guatemala Trip: Culture |
 |
A snapshot of Guatemala's culture as
experienced on The Village Chapel's July 2007
missions trip. Song by Judson Spence.
Photography by Christiev Alphin, Gregory
Byerline, and David Perry.
In response to several comments and
inquiries, please note that this is only a
snapshot of the Guatemalan culture that we
experienced while there. This is not intended
to be a complete illustration of all of
Guatemala. We visited only a small part of
southwestern Guatemala and spent our time in
two villages and one city. Finally, the
"Guatemala Facts" were compiled through
several encyclopedia sources with documented
the validity of that information.

| Violent Evictions at El Estor, Guatemala |

From Rights Action
(http://www.rightsaction.org/video/elestor/):
On January 8th and 9th 2007, hundreds of
police and soldiers in Guatemala forcibly
evicted the inhabitants of several
communities who were living on lands that a
Guatemalan military government had granted to
Canadian mining company INCO in 1965. Local
indigenous people claim the land to be
theirs, and resent the exploitation of a
foreign corporation. Canada's Skye Resources
now lays claim to the land, and paid workers
a nominal sum to destroy people's homes. With
the force of the army and police, company
workers took chainsaws and torches to
people's homes, while women and children
stood by. Skye Resources claims that they
maintained "a peaceful atmosphere during this
action." Tags : Guatemala mining nickel indigenous Maya resistance military police Skye Izabal Estor Q'eqchi' mine business development |
