| 12th Street Rag jam piano/trombone/trumpet/banjo/oboe/violin |
 |
After the official After Hours wind down at
the Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival, many
musicians and fans gather at a house known as
"Skunk Hollow".
When so many musicians are in one place, you
just know a jam session is going to break
out. Here is one of several jam session
videos I shot at the 2008 Skunk Hollow
gathering.
Piano: Keith Taylor
Trombone: Patrick Aranda
Trumpet: Vickey Cox
Banjo: Curt Williams
Oboe: Pepper Rae
Violin: Bonnie Gonzalez
Of course, this is Euday Bowman's famous
Twelfth Street Rag.

| Unrehearsed 4/5-hand piano jam session; "Russian Rag" |
 |
Forgive the mistakes; these pianists had
never played on the same piano together
before, and Tom and Frederick usually don't
play from memory. They're having not only to
try playing from memory, but make up their
own four-hand arrangement on the spot.
This isn't intended to be a concert
performance -- just some pianists having fun.
It's an example of the sort of things that go
on during after-hours at a ragtime festival
(in this case, Sutter Creek Ragtime Festival
2008).
This started when Adam Swanson said he'd love
to hear Tom Brier and Frederick Hodges try
four-hand piano playing. They sat down and
decided to play George Cobb's famous "Russian
Rag" from 1918.
At the end, Adam himself joins in to make it
five-hand piano.
Although there are some big gaffes, the good
bits here are very good for a first attempt,
wouldn't you say? Imagine if they actually
sat down and worked on it! Tags : ragtime piano jam fourhand fivehand four-hand russian rag cobb 1918 brier hodges swanson |

| Tattle-Tale Rag (O'Dell) played by the Raspberry Jam Band |
 |
I composed this rag in about four or five
hours one night in 2003 -- probably the
quickest composition I've ever done. Wish it
always were that easy...
Here it is played by the Raspberry Jam Band
on Friday, 16 November 2007 at the 21st
annual West Coast Ragtime Festival in
Sacramento, California. It is their own
arrangement.
Tom Brier, piano
Mark Meeker, tuba
George Preston, euphonium
Mary Preston, violin
Julia Riley, piccolo
Kitty Wilson, washboard
The sheet music for this rag is in my folio
"17 Rags by Ron O'Dell".
You can hear a piano solo performance by Tom
Brier of this piano here:

performers and fans who can't get enough
ragtime after the official after-hours venues
