| Reynst Jam Jar Pulse Jet on Methanol |
 |
This is my first successful attempt at a
Reynst engine. It's made from half a small
CO2 fire extinguisher. It's initial
dimensions were roughly 150mm diameter, and
500mm long. I cut the top off it and used the
bottom.
It doesn't matter what size extinguisher you
use, but I cut it so the height was roughly
twice the diameter. This seems to work most
times. The extinguisher I used was very thick
steel, so it was easy to weld, and it also
had a domed bottom as you can see. I cut it,
turned it over, and welded it to the base
plate (just a scrap of mild steel I had)
making sure there are no leaks.
Then I drilled a hole in the top of the
chamber, starting with a pilot hole (3mm?)
then working up to about 22-25mm (~1") You
will need to experiment with your chamber to
work out the best size.
Put in 1/4 cup or so (not critical in my
engine, but it may be in yours) of Methanol,
give it a burst of fresh air, and hold a
flame over the hole. It should run. I can
easily put in 1/2 cup of methanol and it will
run to empty.
If it is running with a sharp crackling sound
that you have to yell over, make the hole
*slightly* larger, in stages, until it runs
with a gentle popping sound like in the
video.
If you make the hole slightly too large, like
I did, it won't run. You will need to insert
a piece of tube to bring it down in size. I
used a 50mm long and 20mm diameter piece of
steel tube that friction fitted into the
hole. I can *tune* the engine a little by
sliding it in or out while it is running.
Every time it stops, you will need to get
fresh air in and exhaust out to start the
first cycle. I use an air compressor for
this. It will run aggressively in open air
with no water cooling, but only for about 1
minute, then it stalls from being too rich. Tags : aviation space explosion cycle pulse jet diy gadget mechanics rocket reynst jam jar methanol |

| Jam Jar Jet by Night |
 |
My best jam jar pulse jet engine so far,
running at night so you can see the flame,
with the added bonus of a spectacular finale.

This is 1 of 3 jar "jets" that I made. The
other 2 were smaller apple sauce jars that I
messed up on the hole in the lids. This jar
was a big pasta sauce jar, I messed up the
hole on this one too so while I was at my
dads shop I snagged a washer which had a 7/16
hole in it. Then I used some gasket glue to
hold it down and make a good seal. This made
it so that the hole was practically perfect
and if I needed a smalled or bigger size I
could interchange washers accordingly. They
say use a 1/2 hole but I decided to start
small and 7/16 worked for me, other than the
amount of tries it took to start up but its
only a 1/16 difference.. I put the jar in
some water but it was so big I bet the
contained for the water didn't cover enough
of the jar to keep it cool but I wanted to be
able to see the flame. Oh well, the lids can
go from jar to jar. I don't know if I'll need
a smaller hole though for the smaller jars.
It was cool while it lasted. :] Tags : jam jar jet pulse motor engine |

| Jam Jar Pulse Jet |
 |
Me and 3 friends were bored one night so we
decided to try and make a jam jar pulsejet.
Were using an olive jar with a crudely
punched out hole measuring approximately
15mm, the hole wasn't even round. We
punched out the hole with a thick rusty bolt
and a hammer lol. Its running off of about 8
table spoons of regular gas you'd get at a
gas station. I herd these will also run on
diesel? I'd like to try that out in the near
future.
After 45 minuets of trial and error, this was
the end result. Unfortunately were missing
about 15 seconds of footage at the start,
including the lighting of it which burnt a
2cm hole in my glove. Tags : Pulse pulse jet jam jar gas rocket bomb crude engine motor fire valve valveless hot glass jamjar jamjarpulsejet |

Make magazine published this "how to" on how
to build a jet engine out of a mason jar. It
was hard to get the thing to start. You have
to shake it harder than you would think. Tags : alcohol jet engine jar |
