ames Howard Meredith (born June 25, 1933) is
an American civil rights movement figure. He
was born in Kosciusko, Mississippi of Native
American (Choctaw) and African American
heritage. Meredith enlisted in the United
States Air Force and served from 1951 to
1960. On October 1, 1962, he became the
first black student at the University of
Mississippi after being barred from entering
on September 20. His enrollment, opposed by
Governor Ross Barnett, sparked riots on the
Oxford campus, which required federal troops
and U.S. Marshals, which were sent by
President John F. Kennedy. The riots led to a
violent clash which left two people dead,
including a French journalist Paul Guihard,
48 soldiers injured and 30 U.S. Marshals with
gun wounds. His actions are regarded as a
pivotal moment in the history of civil
rights. He graduated on August 18, 1963 with
a degree in history. Meredith on on June 6,
1966 led a civil rights march, the March
Against Fear from Memphis, Tennessee to
Jackson, Mississippi. During the march James
Howard Meredith was wounded by sniper Aubrey
James Norvell. The photograph of Meredith
after being shot won the Pulitzer Prize for
Photography in 1967. Tags : JAMES MEREDITH CIVIL RIGHTS MISSISSIPPI |

Meredith Baxter (born June 21, 1947 in South
Pasadena, California) is an American actress.
Her mother was the late actress and sitcom
creator Whitney Blake, and her father is Tom
Baxter, who worked in radio. Her stepfather
is sitcom writer, Allan Manings.
She was married three times, most notably to
actor David Birney, whom she met on the set
of the sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie; she
played his wife on the series. After the show
was canceled, the couple became engaged and
were married in 1974. From that date until
their divorce in 1989, she was credited as
Meredith Baxter Birney, a name still commonly
associated with her by the general public as
she went by it during her most prominent
period of work.
She is best known for her work on two
television shows. She first became popular in
Hollywood playing the role of Nancy Lawrence
Maitland on the television drama Family from
1976 to 1980. She received two Emmy Award
nominations for Outstanding Continuing
Performance by a Supporting Actress in a
Drama Series, in 1977 and 1978. The second
role she is well-known for is ex-flower child
Elyse Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties, which
aired from 1982 to 1989. (Coincidentally,
Meredith was born on the same date as her
Family Ties husband, Michael Gross but in a
different city.)
Since Family Ties ended its run, Meredith has
been directing and starring in TV movies. In
1992, she was nominated for an Emmy Award for
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a
Special for her work in A Woman Scorned: The
Betty Broderick Story, in which she plays a
divorcée who was convicted of murder in the
shooting of her ex-husband and his young
wife. She was nominated for a Daytime Emmy
award in 1993 for her work as a lesbian
raising a young son in a CBS after-school
special. In 1997, she once again played the
mother of a character played by Michael J.
Fox, this time on the sitcom Spin City. In
2005, she began appearing in television
commercials for Garden State Life Insurance
Company. In 2006 she temporarily co-hosted
the Today Show with Matt Lauer. Most recently
in 2007 she made a guest appearance on the
ABC drama "What About Brian"
In the 1985 season, Elyse gave birth to
Andrew; the child "grew" into a pre-schooler
(Brian Bonsall) by the next season.
Other characters included the Keatons'
socially inept neighbor Erwin 'Skippy'
Handelman (Marc Price), who had an undying
crush on Mallory, and in later years,
Rambo-like budding artist Nick Moore (Scott
Valentine), who became romantically involved
with Mallory and alarmed various members of
the family with how unknowingly crass and
unmannered he could be.
Alex's primary love interest was a college
student named Ellen Reed (Tracy Pollan, who
later became Michael J. Fox's real-life
wife). The final two seasons featured
Courteney Cox as new girlfriend Lauren
Miller.
Family Ties
It starred Michael J. Fox as Alex P. Keaton,
the very conservative, business-oriented son
of liberal parents Elyse and Steven (Meredith
Baxter-Birney and Michael Gross). Elyse was a
very successful architect, while Steven ran a
public television station. They lived in
suburban Columbus, Ohio with their children:
Alex, Mallory ("Mal") (Justine Bateman) and
Jennifer ("Jen") (Tina Yothers). Another
child, Andrew ("Andy") (Brian Bonsall), was
added later. Tags : Meredith Baxter from GhostCCCP Family Ties Michael J. Fox Elyse and Steven Keaton casa Mike Oldfield arrival abba cover |
