| Giant Scale P-51D Mustang Crash |
 |
Watch as Heidi's brother complety re-kits
his brand new fully-loaded FiberClassics P-51
because he forgot to do a proper flight
control check after he had installed new
aileron servos the week before in Alpnach,
Switzerland. Both he and his helper did see
that all of the controls were moving, just
not in the proper direction. This beautiful
1/4 scale Mustang weighed approx. 20kgs, and
was powered by a 3W-75cc engine swinging a 26
x 12 Menz propeller. Also installed were
retracts,flaps,drop tanks, opening canopy,
fully scale detailed cockpit and pilot. You
will notice the bird start to roll to the
right, so he corrects with left stick. This
makes it roll even more to the right until it
is on its back and left wing low. He then
gives it some right stick input and it now
does a nice roll to the left and auggers in.
Listen to the delayed "Kerrr-splat!!!" sound
that it makes. Sick. Too bad his crewchief
didn't catch the error. A good TOC 3D pilot
like Bill Hempel might have been able to roll
his way up to altitude using elevator and
rudder. Not me. Try it on your RC simulator
sometime.*** A similar incident happened to a
Lufthansa A320 in Frankfurt a few years back.
The captains side-stick was replaced and due
to some Airbus directives and missed wiring
change mods at the blackbox connector, the
left/right command also got reversed!
Maintainance released the aircraft to service
but missed the misstake. And as for the crew,
the before takeoff checklist only verifies
that each "side" (capts. side and copilots
side) was working. The captain was doing the
takeoff and just after liftoff the aircraft
started to roll to the left, then more to the
left until finally the co-pilot hit the
command override button (also known as the
panic button) on his sidestick controller and
saved what would have been a disaster. The
flight data recorder estimates showed that
there was only about 50cm between the wing
and the ground. "Nice recovery Herr
Flieggermann!" Tags : P-51D P51 P-51 Mustang radio control crash crasher airplane rc air Giant Scale |
