| Early Recording Hungarian Magyar Singer Piroska Paprikas |
 |
Piroska Paprikas (1797-1895) is totally
forgotten today but she was a huge star of
the 19th century, known first as "The Queen
of Kolosvar" and later as "The Jenny Lind of
Austria-Hungary". Paprikas began her career
singing and dancing the czardas in a saloon
in her native Kolosvar, and quickly became a
renowned concert artiste throughout her
native land, Europe, and around the western
world. Empress Elizabeth of Austria-Hungary,
weeping, led the funeral procession through
the streets of Budapest when Paprikas died.
She left behind only one recording, presented
here, etched onto a wax cylinder by Edison
himself on his historic 1893 visit to
Hungary. Although she was by then in her
mid-90s this recording will give you some
hint of her legendary talent. The song she
sings is an 18th-century Hungarian lullaby,
the first song Piroska ever learned.
Reportedly she told Edison, "The first will
also be the last."
The photo is by Nadar, taken in 1858 to
commemorate the 25th anniversary of her
legendary Paris triumph. Tags : Magyar Music Hungary Edison wax cylinder Hungarian recording Piroska Paprikas |
