GARLAND ROARK: FICTIONEER, TEXAN
"The palm will grow, the coral will spread..." Discover the books of an unsung American writer: Garland Roark (1904-1985). His specialty: nautical adventure fiction. His once best-known work: "Wake of the Red Witch" (1946). His pseudonym: George Garland (used for his Western fiction). Preferred sea story settings: the South Pacific, the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico. Preferred saddle story setting: the Mogollon Mountains in southeastern New Mexico. Where he's from: a native Texan, he was formerly a longtime resident of Nacogdoches, Texas. Consider reading Garland Roark if: 1) you like potent adventure stories literately told. Roark plots with strength and symphonic grace. Roark's creative mind works like a prism: inspiration hits and then refracts onto the page, in writing, the boldest spectral colors of action, suspense, drama, and romance. His books' chapters aren't conventional "page-turners"; they are more like tidal curtains rising and falling: scene after scene comes and goes with a flourish. Roark's action writing slaps the page like whale flukes on water. For nature, Roark rotates a descriptive kaleidoscope until the pattern of words is poetically proper and then applies it. His characterizations of people are sharp scimitar slices of sensitive insight. Generally speaking, Roark has a "painter's eye" for substance and style—his brushstrokes as wide as necessary to communicate story essentials, as fine as desirable to convey depth and nuance. 2) you like well-defined heroes and heroines. Roark is a literary Vulcan. Creatively heated and hammered, his leading male characters partake invariably of one form of metal: forged steel. If you equate masculinity with strength, mastery, independence, self-esteem, purpose, drive/ambition, self-possession, resourcefulness, and a passion for women in thought and deed, you will like a Roark hero. Creatively smelted and poured with care into winning and shapely molds, his leading female characters partake invariably of one precious metal: gold. (When they're not multi-faceted diamonds, that is.) If you equate femininity with: beauty, grace, sensuality, self-esteem, shrewd appraisal of men, spirited behavior, healthy doses of vanity, resilience, and hero-worship in the form of surrender and loyalty to admired/admirable men, then you will like a Roark heroine. 3) you like story settings of ships, seas, and islands. Roark knows ships. Roark knows seamen. You can lay to that. Roark writes with convincing directness of "faraway" people and places. He virtuosically slings the reader's senses from civilized familiarities into the heightened realities of primitive, forbidding, exotic and erotic earthly contexts. The ensuing value conflicts he dramatizes are fascinating. 4) you find sea stories by Frederick Marryat and C.S. Forester too "British"; Herman Melville too ponderous; Rafael Sabatini too picaresque, Patrick O'Brian a tedious bore. Garland Roark trumps them all. In 1949, Republic Pictures released the movie version of "Wake of the Red Witch" starring John Wayne, Gail Russell, as well as Gig Young and Adele Mara. Dramatically, the film is mere musket fire when compared with the cannon-blast quality of the book. Ditto for Republic's subsequent adaptation of Roark's second novel "Fair Wind to Java" (1953) starring Fred MacMurrary and Vera Ralston. In the early 1950s, actor John Wayne founded Batjac Productions, an independent film-production company he kept busy during the last 20+ years of his career. (The company is still run by Wayne's family.) The name Batjac was taken from the name of a Dutch trading firm—spelled "Batjak"—in Roark's "Red Witch" novel. Note Batjac's coincidental syllabic similarity to another film-related company's name, equally famous: DANJAQ. Founded by Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman in 1962, Danjac is still the holding company associated with the cinematic career of Ian Fleming's James Bond. I cannot recommend "George Garland's" Western fiction as passionately as his nautical fiction. Although competent and bearing the stylistic touches so much more evident in his sea stories, none of his works in the Western genre are remarkable—in spite of a Western Writers of America Spur Award in 1967 for Best Novel for "Hellfire Jackson," co-written with Charles Thomas. Fountainhead Roark/Dominique- She's So High
"It was an act that could be performed in tenderness, as a seal of love, or in contempt, as a symbol of humiliation and conquest. It could be the act of a lover or the act of a soldier violating an enemy woman. He did it as an act of scorn. Not as love, but as defilement. And this made her lie still and submit. One gesture of tenderness from him--and she would have remained cold, untouched..." Howard Roark and Dominique Francon...what more do I really have to say? There are very few books that I can claim meant something in my life. In fact, there were only two, including this one. Ayn Rand, I would like to say you are sacred, but it might mean more if I just say...you're an incredibly selfish woman. ;P I don't own the book Fountainhead and I don't own the movie adapted from it. I don't own the song. I simply own the selfish ability that enabled me to make this video. ;P

Pokemon Pearl Gym Battle 1 - Emil vs. Roark
Hi there, Pokemaster Emil here. This is my first gym battle in Pokemon Pearl. Roark is a a rock type trainer with the following team: Geodude Lv. 12 Onix Lv. 12 Cranidos Lv. 14 Will I be able to defeat Roark "the rock?" Feel free to comment just don't be too mean. P.S. The reason why my pokemon won't listen to me is because I am not its original trainer. My friends and I traded starters with each other to have a bigger variety in the beginning of the game and so make eventual pokedex completion easier.
