The Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage
System (SMES) is a system that can store and
discharge electricity continuously as needed.
Superconductivity is the flow of electric
current without electrical resistance and is
achieved when electrical resistance is
naturally eliminated by cooling certain
elements and chemical compounds. In a
superconductive state, a constant magnetic
field is continuously produced even if
electricity is conducted, and as a result,
electrical energy can be stored as magnetic
energy.
When SMES is used in factories, it can be
used as a backup electricity source that can
compensate for load damage caused by an
instantaneous voltage drop due to lightning
or other factors.
Another feature of this system is that it can
reliably supply power even in locations where
the frequency fluctuates because it can also
support drastic load changes.
Chubu Electric Power and Furukawa Electric
are establishing SMES system that can supply
10,000 kilowatts of power.
