Time for another round of shoot'em ups! These
were the last ones I chose to beat, played
mainly between MAY/JUL-08. The only true
stinker I can name from these is the
incredibly awful Xenon 2 for my beloved Mega
Drive... I beat all of them with 1 credit,
with the exception of Panzer Dragoon and Mars
Matrix (which I continue to play - got to the
6th stage so far).
I hope some shoot'em up fans out there enjoy
the compilation!
Featured games:
- R-Type (Master System)
- Abadox - The Deadly Inner War (NES)
- Mega SWIV (Mega Drive)
- Whip Rush (Mega Drive)
- Xenon 2 (Mega Drive)
- Panorama Cotton (Mega Drive)
- Cotton 100% (SNES)
- Axelay (SNES)
- Panzer Dragoon (Saturn)
- [Shooter] Space Shot (Playstation)
- Mars Matrix (Dreamcast)

Between university and my first job I made
this game. It's a bit weird looking, I know.
That was half the point. I was trying to see
if I could work with a self imposed
restriction - design a game in monochrome,
and see how well you can communicate the game
play through rather abstract means. I don't
think I totally succeeded, but I learned a
awful lot about how to express information to
a player in clear, concise ways.
There's also some interesting gameplay
mechanics - nothing "dies" in this world
(except bullets and bombs). You're simply
"turning" actors between light and dark
energy - so if a light person continuously
shoots a dark person, the dark person
eventually becomes light. If a dark person
shoots another dark person, it's like
"healing".
The original heightmap engine was made by
David Hillier, a friend back in the day. I
made a big mess of his engine trying to get
this specific look. Sozzles, Dave!
I don't really have any plans to pursue this
game further, although... on the Wii? Hmm. I
can think of a neat control system! Tags : game play experimental blue shmup shoot em up abstract indie games rez aubrey hesselgren xbox live arcade xbla |

Here is my very first fangame. It is made in
1999 in Klik 'n Play, later ported to
Multimedia Fusion to take advantage of
advanced features.
Get the game at:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/abp1vz
It is a Gradius-style shmup that has a
prominent dimension-hopping element. That
element has been a staple in my fangames
since, from Xeno Fighters EX all the way to
Super Mario Fusion.
Since it is my first fan game, it does have
its flaws. For example, the weapons system is
very unpolished and confusing. One weapon is
completely useless (it was more of Klik 'n
Play's fault, since I had almost no control
over variables).
This video showcases the final mission, which
is a trip to Microsoft Land, a hellish
reality of the Microsoft environment from the
mid-90's!
General Protection Faults!
EMM386 Exception errors!
Flying Windows Icons!
Program Manager!
This stage has both a midboss and a final
boss, complete with cutscenes. Tags : parallel dimensions '99 pd99 homebrew fangame fan game shmup gradius microsoft bill gates |

These are the shoot'em ups I beat between
SEP-07 and FEB-08. It's a nice compilation
that encompasses the Mega Drive, the Sega
Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast. Yes, I know
that there are some stinkers here, but hey -
they deserve to be beaten as well!
Featured games:
- Hellfire (Mega Drive)
- Bio-Hazard Battle (Mega Drive)
- Bio-Ship Paladin (Mega Drive)
- Master of Weapon (Mega Drive)
- Burning Force (Mega Drive)
- Arrow Flash (Mega Drive)
- Twinkle Tale (Mega Drive)
- Divine Sealing (Mega Drive)
- Gun Frontier (Saturn)
- Thunder Force V (Saturn)
- Giga Wing (Dreamcast)
I decided to keep their original audio. The
video doesn't make the games any justice
though...
Enjoy!
