England's most well-preserved 13th Century
fortified Manor House. Built in the 1290s,
it survived the welsh border skirmishes of
the middle-ages and the civil war in the
1600s.
Apart from minor repairs in the 1890s, the
house (not really a castle) is mostly in its
original 13th century state. Tags :StokesayCastleShropshire
The main melody originally belonged to a
setting I composed of no 36 of A.E. Housman's
A Shropshire Lad for tenor and piano. A
couple of years ago it came back to me,
almost demanding to be a piece for oboe and
strings. So here is my nostalgic Shropshire
Pastoral, unashamedly harking back to the
world of Housman and Vaughan Williams, and to
an England that existed only ever, really, in
the imagination. Tags :originalcompositionmodernclassicaloboestringorchestraandstringsShropshire

The Shropshire Union Canal (Middlewich
Branch) runs for 16 miles connecting the Main
Lines of the Shropshire Union and Trent &
Mersey Canals between Barbridge Junction and
Middlewich Junction. Or it would do if it
wasn't for the Wardle Canal which runs from
Middlewich Junction to the start of the
Shropshire Union Canal (Middlewich Branch).
At 100 feet in length and featuring a single
lock, the Wardle Canal is possibly the
smallest canal in the world. Tags :shropshireunioncanaltrentmerseybarbridgemiddlewichjunctionwardlelocknarrowboatfourcountiesringcheshire
