was wohl das Schönste wär'

| BRAIN DONORS: Zucker Brothers talk Marx Bros remake |
 |
An interview from the early 90's with the
Zucker Brothers, two of the directors behind
classic comedies like "Airplane!", "Top
Secret", and "The Naked Gun" films. Here they
talk about a film they produced which was a
remake of the Marx Brothers' "A Night at the
Opera". The remake starred John Turturro as
the conniving Groucho-style barrister.
British comedian Mel Smith also starred in
this film as a Chico type. The film was
originally titled "Lame Ducks", and changed
it's name after being delayed for a year.
Incidentally, it received a recommendation
from The Onion. Tags : Zucker Brothers Bros Marx Groucho Chico Harpo Zeppo Gummo Night at the Opera Police Squad Naked Gun Top Secret Airplane |

| MediaVest - Zucker - Eric Schmidt - NBC - Quarterlife - Qtra |
 |
MEDIAVEST is in talks with two cinema ad
networks to transfer up to $100 million in
prime-time TV ads to in-theater movie
advertising. President of investment and
activation Donna Speciale said that with
ratings continuing to erode and a lengthy
writers strike, "We can't keep our money in
TV." The company is speaking with National
CineMedia and Screenvision, which control a
combined 29,000 screens.
JEFF ZUCKER criticized the economics of
mobile TV, saying that phone carriers reap
90% of the profits and that the technology is
"not that important." The NBCU CEO was
speaking at Davos in a group that included
Howard Stringer, Eric Schmidt and Kevin
Martin. Zucker said NBCU is only playing
mobile TV "in a small way." Google's Schmidt
took a more positive view of the technology,
citing the ability to generate revenue using
targeted ads based on a mobile user's
specific location. Schmidit believes that
mobile advertising will take in over $1
billion in revenue by 2012.
NBC has moved Quarterlife's premiere up to
Tuesday February 16th, following The Biggest
Loser. Starting in March the
Internet-turned-network show will move to
Sunday evening at 9 PM. The Tuesday premiere
is meant to give the show a boost by
borrowing some of The Biggest Loser's
momentum. In the Sunday slot it will compete
with Oprah's Big Give on ABC and reruns on
both CBS and FOX.
QTRAX will launch its free P2P music download
service with over 25 million copyrighted
tracks, including content from all four major
labels. The ad-supported venture will split
ad revenue with copyright holders based on
play counts. SONY ERICSSON has also made
progress in launching its online music store,
which will open in May. The company has
signed deals with three of the big four
labels. In related news, AMAZON announced
plans to take its MP3 store international
sometime in the near future.
BRIGHT HOUSE NETWORKS is rolling out a Start
Over service for 600,000 subscribers in its
Tampa Bay system. Start Over was developed by
Time Warner Cable, but the Bright House Start
Over deployment is almost three times the
size of any TWC rollouts. As with other Start
Over services, users can re-start a show
after it has begun playing.
PLUS: Showtime will offer an online
sneak-peak of "The L Word" after seeing
positive results of letteing users stream the
season premiere. RKO Productions signed an
interim deal with the WGA on Friday. And
cyclist Lance Armstrong will take an equity
position in Demand Media and team up to offer
health-and-wellness site Livestrong.com.

HBO will soon begin testing HBO on Broadband,
a service that will allow current subscribers
to watch the channel's content online. The
service requires a PC application that offers
both automatic downloads and live streams of
HBO channels. The service will enter a trial
period this week in Green Bay and Milwaukee
before spreading to other parts of the
country.
THE WGA will meet informally with studio
heads this week to discuss a possible return
to the bargaining table. The Guild will send
West Coast President Patric Verrone and
Executive Director David Young to meet with
Disney chief Bob Iger and News. Corp.
President Peter Chernin. In related news, the
WGA has scheduled a major rally in Manhattan
on Tuesday, the day Oscar nominations are
announced. Meanwhile, the fallout from the
strike continued as CBS has canceled around
20 projects that were in development.
JEFF ZUCKER told the Financial Times that he
intends to use the current writers strike as
a catalyst to remove inefficiencies from NBC
- including pilot season, the upfront, and
more. Zucker called them "vestiges of an era
that's gone by and won't return." He
predicted that the development process will
change in the near future and said the strike
has hastened a change that would have been
necessary eventually.
YAHOO will reportedly layoff up to 20% of its
workforce in the next two weeks. Both Silicon
Valley Insider and TechCrunch's Michael
Arrington have reported on the pending
layoffs, saying that the announcement could
come during the company's earnings call on
January 29th. 1500 to 2500 people may be
affected. The potential downsizing would be
the result of a project during Q4 that sought
out redundancies and waste within the
company. CEO Jerry Yang is expected to make
the decision this week.
GETTY IMAGES will soon put itself up for sale
and has hired Goldman Sachs to facilitate the
deal. The company offers high-quality
photographs for use in print, video and
elsewhereand has over 4 million visitors to
its website every month. However, low-cost
rivals and amateur UGC sites such as Flickr
have challenged its business model and
undercut its pricing. Getty recently acquired
iStockPhoto, one of its cheaper competitors.
However, its stock price is languishing and
bids for the company are due by the end of
the month.
