| Managing Antiretroviral (ARV) Side Effects |
 |
Danny West is a trainer, coach, and
leadership consultant, has been living with
HIV for the past 24 years, and remains
healthy today, having been successfully
treated with antiretroviral medications
(ARVs) for the last five years. There are
many treatments available today for HIV.
Anyone who is on "combination therapy" is on
a combination of multiple drugs. Early on,
Danny was treated with AZT alone. In his
case, the side effects of AZT monotherapy
bothered him and he decided to go off AZT at
that time. Since then, more antiretroviral
medications have been developed, and he is
now on a combination therapy that works well
for him and has minimal side effects that he
can manage and live with. The side effects no
longer interfere with his everyday life. His
viral load is undetectable, and his CD4 count
is increasing. His immune system is
functioning effectively and is keeping HIV at
bay. For more information, visit

| Now That We Have Antiretroviral Drugs,Does HIV Still Matter? |
 |
Cass Mann is one of the world's longest-term
HIV-positive diagnosed gay men, now in his
third decade of living with HIV, and the
founder of UK's only gay men's HIV/AIDS
charity Positively Healthy, which provides
HIV services including education, support,
and peer counselling. Here he talks about why
HIV is still dangerous, and safer sex is
still vital, even in the age of
antiretroviral medications (ARV) and highly
active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Today,
HIV positive people are treated with a
combination of multiple ARVs/HAARTs.
Selecting a combination of ARVs/HAARTs for a
particular patient is a process of
identifying a combination of ARVs/HAARTs that
will effectively treat that patient's
strain(s) of HIV and that they can also
tolerate. ARVs/HAARTs can have serious side
effects. In many cases, people can't tolerate
the side effects of an ARV/HAART, so they're
unable to take that ARV/HAART. Sometimes,
people experience side effects with every
combination of ARVs/HAARTs they try, are
unable to take any ARVs/HAARTs, and die as a
result. Many strains of HIV are resistant to
one or more ARVs/HAARTs, so those ARVs/HAARTs
won't help you against that strain. It's
important to realize that taking ARVs/HAARTs
is actually taking chemotherapy for life, and
we don't know what the long-term effects of
ARVs/HAARTs will be. For more information,

| Challenges in Antiretroviral Therapy |
 |
Phil Johnson, M.D. discusses why it's so
important for HIV/AIDS patients to follow
their antiretroviral (ARV) medication regimen
as prescribed. During active infection, up to
10 billion HIV particles will be created each
day. This provides ample chance for the virus
to mutate in ways that provide resistance to
the medication. By keeping the blood levels
of the ARV medication high, that will keep
the viral load low and reduce the opportunity
for resistance mutations to flourish. When
HIV develops resistance to one medication, it
may develop resistance to other ones at the
same time. Patients may also have to deal
with side effects such as the redistribution
of fat in the body and increases to their
cholesterol level. Not every patient can
tolerate every ARV. Therefore, it's critical
for patients to make every ARV last as long
as possible. When people with resistant HIV
have unprotected sex, they may transmit
resistant HIV to their sex partners, meaning
the newly infected person will have far fewer
treatment options. Genetic testing of the
virus can be used to determine which
medications the patient's particular
strain(s) will be resistant to. Visit

| Testimonial of Charlie Johnson, Person Living With HIV |
 |
Charlie Johnson, a recovering heroin addict
who has been living with HIV for fourteen
years, describes his personal experience,
including: what it was like to learn he was
HIV positive; how this led to a long, deep
depression; how this led to more drug use;
how meeting the right doctor helped him to
face his drug addiction, go through drug
detox, and comply with his antiretroviral
drug medications; how he is now working to
help others who are HIV positive, and set up
a program in South Africa to provide
antiretroviral drugs to people there. Charlie

| HIV, AIDS, and ARVs: Take Your Antiretrovirals as Prescribed! |
 |
Becky Kuhn, M.D., explains why it's so
important for HIV positive people who are on
antiretroviral medications (ARVs) to take
their medications at the prescribed dosages
on the prescribed schedules. This will reduce
the risk of developing a strain of HIV that
is resistant to the ARV medication. Visit

| Drugs and HIV Evolution |
 |
Standard treatment for HIV with single-drug
therapy changed in 1996, when a new class of
antiretroviral drugs was approved. The
resulting "highly active antiretroviral
therapy" combines a powerful drug cocktail
that cuases greater disruption to the HIV
life cycle and has lowered AIDS deaths in
developed nations. Tags : |

| Preventing Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (Developing) |
 |
If a woman who is HIV positive becomes
pregnant, there's a risk that her baby will
contract HIV during pregnancy, childbirth, or
breast feeding. Becky Kuhn, M.D. explains how
the risk can be reduced through the use of
antiretroviral medications for the mother and
the infant. These guidelines are for women in
developing countries which often lack access
to clean water, infant formula, medical care,
and antiretroviral medications. Visit

Ghana has more than 320,000 people living
with HIV including 180,000 women and 25,000
are children under the age of 15. There are
an estimated 170,000 children who have lost
one or both parents to AIDS.
Ghana's results: (RED) money that flows to
Ghana supports Global Fund financed programs
which have already:
* Enabled 371,000 people to complete HIV
testing and counseling process.
* Trained 9991 HIV testing counselor and 879
prevention of mother-to-child counselors.
* Enabled testing and counseling of over
109,000 pregnant women.
* Established and supported 407 centers to
reduce the risk of mother-to-child
transmission of HIV.
* Provided preventative antiretroviral
treatment to over 3,250 HIV-positive pregnant
women to reduce the risk of mother-to-child
transmission of HIV.
