| Economist Dr. Jeffrey Sachs on Biotechnology |
 |
About one billion people "or one-sixth of the
world's population" live in extreme poverty
on less than $1 per day. Dr. Jeffrey Sachs
"director of The Earth Institute and UN
Millennium Project" has been involved in
identifying the challenges to and solutions
for poverty alleviation for more than 20
years. He describes the need and potential
for the benefits of biotechnology in
agriculture to help the poorest farmers grow
more food and convert subsistence agriculture
into commercial farming.

Animal biotechnology encompasses a broad
range of techniques for the genetic
improvement of domesticated animal species
including selective breeding, artificial
insemination, cloning, and genetic
engineering. Learn about both biomedical and
agricultural applications of animal
biotechnology and some of the science-based
and ethical concerns that are engendered by
certain applications. [8/2008] [Science]

| Rapid microbial detection - Environmental Biotechnology CRC |
 |
EBCRC is developing rapid in-field diagnostic
devices that will detect the presence of
pathogenic organisms or chemical
contamination in water in minutes.
The simple-to-use system will provide results
directly to portable devices via simple
electronic readouts, laptops and PDAs. The
system will be based on proprietary
technology, which integrates sample
preparation and analysis and will be
applicable for the detection of a broad range
of organisms for example common water borne
contaminants such as faecal coliforms, E.
coli, Legionella, Cryptosporidium and
Giardia. The system is highly adaptable to
food, environmental and point of care
applications. Tags : ebcrc environmental biotechnology pathogen rapid microbial detection |
