| Wife-carriers Compete for Beer |
 |
ANCHOR:
Finland is becoming famous for it's quirky
sporting events. Over the weekend, couples
from all over the world competed in an
international wife-carrying contest. What's
the draw? Well, the winner gets his wife's
weight in beer. Here's more:
STORY:
A month before the Olympics the opening
ceremony of a sporting event of a rather
different calibre commences.
Here in Finland couples all around the world
turn up each year to compete in the annual
wife carrying contest.
This year competitors have travelled from
Kenya, Germany, Estonia and the UK for the
race.
[Ash Davies and Aila Bruce, Asked: "How Did
You Decide Your Costume"]:
"We have a costume designer with us, we came
with our costume designer all the way from
England she has designed this especially so
we can compete, streamline you know,
aerodynamic tuning."
[Ash Davies and Aila Bruce, Asked: "What is
your Special Strength"]:
"Unity, harmony and technique I think"
The idea is to carry ones spouse around an
obstacle course...and the winner gets his
wife's weight in beers.
And in some cases that would mean a whole lot
of beer.
The contest attracts the crazy, the fun lover
and a few professional looking wife carriers
who seem to see it as an athletic event.
The obstacles can be a bit tricky.
But with plenty of crowd support eventually
almost anything can be tackled.
And while it certainly looks like hard work
for the men ... think of the hapless wife.
It's hardly dignified ...and most are in a
for a bumpy if not wet ride.
The contest is rooted in the legend of
Ronkainen the Robber, said in the 19th
century to have tested aspiring members of
his gang by forcing them to lug sacks of
grain or live swine over a similar course.
It also purportedly stems from an even
earlier tribal practice of wife-stealing.
But it's all worth it in the end... as the
winners enjoy the glory and think about all
that beer.
[Kirsti Viltrop, Contest Winner]:
"Yesterday we have had a really bad luck
because we fell and we lost our first place
in the sprint and today it's super."
For others it's a matter of coming back next
year and better luck next time. Tags : ntd beer competition finland sports wife-carrying contest olympics |

| Submarine Aircraft Carriers: the Future of Naval War 1/2 |
 |
We were very lucky in WW2 that the Japanese
Admirals were more egomaniac-ial and stupid
than our naval and marine corps flag officer
racketeers. They were more obsessed with
sinking our fleet in a feel-good duel
reliving Tsushima of 1904 than even Admiral
King was who had to be ORDERED by President
FDR to convoy escort civilian oil
tanker/cargo ships to keep Britain from
starving. King had to be ORDERED by FDR to
build and operated 100+ "jeep" escort
aircraft carriers that with our long-range
seaplanes (King liked these to find fleets to
sink) smothered the German U-boats as well as
the Japanese fleet and half of their cargo
ships--so even inept frontal assault marines
could prevail over starved-out, dug-in enemy
infantry. U.S. Army General MacArthur was
smarter and bypassed the starving Japanese
infantry employing tri-phibious (air, land,
sea) warfare hopping from air-base to air
base taken by Airborne Paratroops and
amphibious assaults backed by light and
medium tanks to further cut-off the enemy
from their home islands. USMC TALKS about
"maneuver warfare" while MacArthur DID IT,
taking us all the way to Japan--the long way
but with far less casualties than marines
suffered taking islands we didn't even need.
Japan encircled by air-dropped and
submarine-laid sea mines and the
tank-mechanized Russians they feared greatly
having been wiped out in land combats early
in WW2 by them, would have surrendered
without the atomic bombs being dropped. We
didn't need the handfuls of large, sexy
egomaniac lover's fleet aircraft carriers
that Admiral King lusted for, either:

Thank God, the Japanese brass did not
understand the importance of logistics like
our lower ranking USN sub officers did who
sank the other half of their merchant fleet
with our excellent Gato class submarines.
Until the SC-1/2 SeaHawk, the Japanese had
the best SEAPLANE fighters of WW2 and had
they cared about their merchant ships
supplied them with battleship/cruiser
catapults and Zero (Rufe) fighter float
planes to ward off our air attacks--and
eventually radar and MAD-detect our
submarines to get their supplies through to
their island garrisons the USMC casualties
and glorious self-validation would have been
100%.

Another thing the Japanese were BETTER AT
THAN US AMERICANS--that's right--like their
long-range Long Lance torpedoes, too--was
their long-range submarines which could
operate SEAPLANES to scout ahead for our
fleet and do small bombing attacks.

As we will see in the next video, the
Japanese of WW2 were far more advanced in
naval warfare than we are TODAY. Tags : submarine aircraft carriers I-400 macarthur midway myth ww2 ssgn seals navspecwar aichi seran seaplane |

| Carriers Hit Tokyo; Old Glory Over Iwo Jima 1945/3/19 |
 |
1) "Plowing through tempestuous seas the U.
S. Fifth Fleet takes positions several
hundred miles off Tokyo ... the huge carriers
of Task Force 58 emerge from the armada ...
and fleets of war planes swoop away, their
destination Tokyo. En route, Jap ships are
plastered and sunk by air cannon. Tokyo's
docks are pounded. Mammouth Imperial air
fields are strafed repeatedly. Intercepting
Zeros are destroyed. Gun cameras record power
dives on sprawling Jap factories. Rockets
speed down into an aluminum factory, and huge
fires mount from Tokyo. "Combat loss - Jap
817 planes, 51 vessels - U.S. 9 planes and 4
pilots."
2) Old Glory Flies Over Iwo Jima - "With the
costly beach head finally secure on Iwo Jima,
the U.S. Marines turn their attention to Mt.
Suribachi, the volcano which is covered with
Jap guns. Off shore, U.S. Naval ships pour
tons of shells into the mountain. The Marines
slowly advance uphill as U.S. dive bombers
place sticks of bombs immediately ahead of
the Leathernecks. Jap fortifications with
narrow entrances and huge, thick walls are
reduced with hand grenades. Battered Jap gun
emplacements, and scores of slain Japs are
passed. When at last the summit is reached,
the Marines enact one of the stirring scenes
in American history, the Stars and Stripes
are planted on Suribachi, 750 miles from
Tokyo!" (partial newsreel) Tags : WWII Tokyo Iwo Jima Old Glory Japan Suribachi |

| Truman Vacation; Kamikaze Attack US Carriers 1945/6/25 |
 |
1) "Olympia, WA: Taking a brief vacation
before addressing the final session of the
San Francisco Conference, President Truman
goes fishing (you guessed it, they all got
away), and then visits majestic Mount
Ranier." scenes of Truman guest at Governor's
mansion, Charles Ross with press, Truman
decorates soldier with Congressional Medal of
Honor, fishes in Puget Sound in colorful
sweater, travels to Mt. Ranier and throws
snowball
2) Eisenhower Honored by Home Town -
"Abilene, Kansas: The farm youth who left for
West Point and a career that brought him
worldwide fame returns to receive the honours
of his home town. 'Ike' is welcomed as a
neighbor, not as the hero who led his men to
victory."
3) Jap Suicide Pilots Strike U.S. Carriers -
"In the Pacific: Nip 'Kamikaze' pilots, in
fanatical attempts to die for their Emperor,
are shot down in numbers by one of our Task
Forces. Some get through and crash their
plans on the decks of our ships. Our men,
attempting to bring their planes in safely,
have trouble aplenty, one bursting in flames
after landing." scenes of Japan targets
strafed by U.S. planes, takeoffs and landings
on aircraft carriers, fires, kamikaze planes
attack, 90% driven off, one plane hits stern
of carrier USS Bunker Hill, fire hoses, 375
dead, burial at sea, USS Bunker Hill reaches
repair yard. (complete newsreel) Tags : Truman Eisenhower Ike Kamikaze |
