In 1864, she introduced Theravāda Buddhism
among the Buddhists living in Bangladesh.
Prior to establishment of this the Buddhists
were followers of Tantrayāna or Tantric
Buddhism. She brought the stream of
Theravāda Buddhism by reforming this

The revival of forest meditation moment took
place in this period. A Buddhist monk named
Ven. Sadhanananda (Vana-bhante) hailed from
CHT was forerunner for introduction of this
practice. He ordained in 1949 in Chittagong
Buddhist temple, which was established in
1899. He is still playing important roles to
teach and practice meditation in Bangladesh.
The Buddhist of Bangladesh follows Theravāda
Buddhism as Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand,
Laos, Cambodia and other Theravada countries.
In 1972, a Buddhist temple named Dharmarajik
Bouddha Vihāra was established in Dhaka. In
addition to this, Shakyamuni Buddhist
Vihāra, Mirpur-13, Dhaka Bangladesh was also
established in 1983. At present, there are 4
(four) Buddhist temples in Dhaka, the capital

The Queen Kalindi over administration in 1832
following her husband king Dharam Bux Kha.
The British government officially
acknowledged her to be queen in 1844. She
ruled for about 27-28 years and played
important role on the social, political and
religious field etc(4). The establishment of
Theravāda Buddhism was one of the most
significant events under her reign. She
invited Ven. Saramedha Mahāthero from
Myanmar (Burma) to establish this faith in
1856. Under her royal patronage, Buddhism
commences to flourish in Chittagong, Comilla,
CHTs and different parts of Bangladesh. She
built a Buddhist temple at Rājānagar in
1856 and established a Bhikkhu Sima
(ordination hall-which is first built in
Theravāda tradition) for propagation of
Theravāda Buddhism. Under her rule she had
undertaken measures to translate Buddhist
religious book called "Thaduang"(5) (Burmese)
from Burmese into Bengali language. She
appointed Nil Chandra Das and Phul Chandra
Lothak as in charge for translation of the
book. This book is given title of " Bouddha
Rañjika" into Bengali that published in
1873. The queen held a procession
accompanying the monks belonging to venerable
Sangha Rājā in the same year. She alone
with her famous elephant named "Golbadini"
paraded around the royal palace, the
Rājānagar are and distributed the copies of
