| Howie Deutch on Beverly Hills Playhouse Acting School |
 |
Howie Deutch talks about working with Milton
Katselas, Kate Hudson and others. He has
studied at the Beverly Hills Playhouse for
over 25 years. Howie talks about how he did
a movie called "My Best Friend's Girl" with
Kate Hudson and he was trying to direct her
and impress her with big words. And she just
said "Why don't you just tell me what you
want". And he thought to many classes at the
BHP, where he has been studying for 25 years.
And he remembered a story Milton had told
about when Kate Hudson was studying there.
Milton had directed her mom, Goldie Hawn. One
morning, Kate was in an ensemble scene and
had one line, and during the critique Milton
looked at Kate and told her "You're going to
be star", and 6 weeks later she was cast in
"Almost Famous" and she became a star. Howie
says that the Beverly Hills Playhouse has a
lot of stories like that and that he has
witnessed them. "Just tell people what you
want", is what Milton taught him. During a
time when Howie was unemployed, he did a
scene from a John Patrick Shanley play in
class and it went very well, and Milton was
very complementary about it, and that meant
more to him than a hit movie. A big hit movie
means that you're validated and that you're
respected, and this, coming from Milton,
meant more. Howie thinks of Milton as a
mentor and teacher and he respects him. He
don't take that word lightly. Milton has
earned that respect from Howie over the years
because he is a straight shooter. He won't
tell you what's convenient, he'll tell you
the truth in terms of your work and life in a
way that helps Howie reach for a higher bar.
Milton suggested that Howie direct "A Man for
All Seasons". Howie was nervous about it
Milton said that he would understand it
because it's about power. During the critique
for it, Milton made it clear to him that he
had succeeded because he had directed
something he was afraid of. That reminded
Howie of something Jack Lemon (who also
studied with Milton) said—that if he reads
something that scares him, he's got to do it.
Howie did "Grumpier Old Men" with Jack Lemon
and every time he was about to act, he'd
whisper "It's magic time". For Howie, he'd
say "it's magic time" with Milton. Ethically
and morally, the Beverly Hills Playhouse is
not just an acting class, but a class to
learn more than that. When Howie started with
Milton, he had no experience directing, and
he got the chance to direct a love story. The
guy and girl didn't seem to have chemistry.
Howie confided in Milton, and Milton said to
tell the girl that he likes her, and tell the
guy that she likes him, and that'll make them
want to have sex. That was his first movie,
and it was "Pretty in Pink". "Milton's
experience and generosity changed my career."
