| Vint Cerf on the Internet's future |
 |
Thirty years ago Vint Cerf and a colleague
developed the TCP/IP communication protocols
that form the foundation for the Internet.
Today, Cerf is vice president and chief
Internet evangelist for Google, where part of
his job is to identify new Internet
applications and technologies.
Cerf recently spoke with Government
Technology at Google's Washington DC offices.
During the course of an hour-long
conversation, Cerf spoke about Internet
opportunities and challenges. He also gave
his views on net neutrality, municipal
wireless projects, mobile connectivity and
other critical issues.
What does the man widely considered to be the
father of the Internet predict for future?
Cerf sees a handful of clear trends over the
next five years. Tags : Vint Cerf Internet Future wireless e.Republic connectivity trends GovTech Government Technology eRepublic |

| Robot Race: DARPA Urban Challenge |
 |
The Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency, known as DARPA, offered 3.5 million
in prize money to the robot building teams
who could build the safest and most precise
autonomous robotic land vehicles. The 60 mile
course set in an urban environment, had 50
"traffic" vehicles driven by stunt drivers,
four-way intersections, blocked roads,
sections of unmarked pavement, and other
robots simultaneously running. The robots
were also required to obey all the traffic
laws of the State of California.
35 teams arrived to the qualifying event just
prior to the Urban Challenge. There were 20
slots allotted to start in the Urban
Challenge, but that was not the number to
qualify. By the middle of the first mission
of three, as vehicles began to drop from the
running, there were rising doubts that any
'bot would finish. Tags : news e.Republic erepublic GTtv Government Technology DARPA Urban Challenge autonomous robot LIDAR NQE Tether Whitaker 57 |
