| Self Portrait Dancing to Daso in Dubai (aftr J Mekas, 003) |
 |
June 26, 2008 @ Keva, Dubai. Fourth in a
series of dancing self portraits with camera
in hand. I'm lucky enough to get to spend 6
weeks in Dubai for my day job. I'm 2 weeks
in, and it's already been plenty of
adventure. From what I read, clubbing in
Dubai is ritzier than Miami or Ibiza, dress
code everywhere and mostly house music. In
Time Out Dubai I found a single listing for a
bi-weekly techno night called Paranoia, and
sent an email to get guest list, and was
assured by the promoter that they are the
only techno jam in town. The special
international guest this night was a German
from Cologne named Daso, who makes melodic
minimal techno that has a tendency to get
trippy. His biggest releases are Det on
Spectral Sounds (made famous by their records
for Matthew Dear's Audion), and Thujon, which
I've heard played out a lot. Daso's work is
stripped down, melodic and trippy without
getting cheesey, plenty fun to dance to. The
video has two prominent light sources. One is
a set of red lights on the floor lining the
dance floor, the other a Johnny Walker sign
you can make out occasionally, and when you
see him move, it aint the camera shakin',
it's Johnny gettin' down! The last 2:30 I
started playing with the arm/lens on the
camera, spinning it back and forth, which
didn't actually make for interesting visuals,
but accounts for the extra clicks. Enjoy the
extra special added percussion ;-) Tags : Techno Music Dancing Jonas Mekas Daso Spectral Sounds Ghostly Self Portrait |
