Poet, translator, critic, anthologist, and
Chairman of the National Endowment for the
Arts, Dana Gioia explains his new mission for
recreating the NEA: that is, to take the best
of all arts and bring them to the broadest
public possible. So far during his tenure,
the NEA has brought one million students to
productions of Shakespeare plays and has
given US military personnel and their
families opportunities to write about their
experiences through the NEA's Operation
Homecoming. Gioia covers many of the NEA's
other projects and explains that the NEA
provides 2000 grants per year, to both groups
and individuals.

Can Poetry Matter? Essays on Poetry and
American Culture. His third volume of poetry,

presentation, Dana Gioia talks about the
state of poetry in American culture and reads
