"Bruce Wasserstein: Gouging Grandma", follows
Robin Berson, the daughter of an Atria
resident, and Dino Vallenes, a maintenance
worker at an Atria facility, as they travel
to Bermuda to speak out at Lazard's annual
shareholder meeting.
Lazard paid Bruce Wasserstein $41 million for
2007 and, on the same day, gave him a new
five-year deal worth about another $100
million. Average pay for Atria workers is
$8-$10 an hour, and workers report that the
costs of company-offered healthcare puts it
well beyond their reach. At the same time,
elderly residents and workers have cited
wide-ranging concerns, such as poor patient
care, poverty wages for employees and
skyrocketing rent increases, at Atria
facilities. In response to complaints from
residents, legislators in CA and NY have
called on Atria to stop gouging residents and
respect its employees. Tags : lazard bruce wassterstein atria health care assisted living nursing home private equity buyout leverage |

| Price Gouging at the Supermarket |
 |
Searching the Wellcome shelves for milk this
morning reminded me of a chapter in the
Undercover Economist which discusses how
supermarkets price gouge by ostensibly
misplacing cheaper substitutes, often
relegating them to an obscure shelf on the
other side of the shop.
I was looking for milk so I made my way over
to the drink aisle where I had previously
procured soya milk. Indeed, the familiar
soya milk brands were there; however, to my
amusement, no cow's milk was to be found, I
noticed. Wondering where it could be, since
I fancied drinking some, I went to the cereal
shelves since, I conjectured, milk must be
close by its breakfast staple.
I found the cow's milk in the next aisle, as
predicted, but not before the organic soya
milk, which stood listlessly next to the
cow's milk, caught my eye. There were
several varieties, from different brands, and
the prices ranged from $14.5 to $20.5HKD.
The cheapest soya milk at first blush seemed
appealing when compared to the other soya
milks; and when weighing whether to drink
"conventional" cow's milk or whether to drink
organic soya milk, my elitism impelled me to
choose organic soya milk, the official,
pretentious drink of New York Time's readers.
My ostentatiousness had almost blinded me to
price; and it didn't help that Wellcome, the
duplicitous retailer it is, decided to put
non-organic milk away from its dairy cousins
so the thought of paying 16.8HKD for soya
milk doesn't seem so absurd with 8.5HKD boxes
of milk placed out of sight; such sagacity
leads to fatter profits! Thankfully, my
wallet abruptly ripped me from this reverie
to remind me that for the price of one box of
organic soya milk, I could have two boxes of
the non-organic kind, if only I would kindly
make my way back to the drink aisle. I
agreed without scruple and subsequently
purchased a double portion of non-organic
soya milk.
As the Undercover Economist recommends, it's
best to vote with one's wallet to support
retailers who will not exploit the merits of
organic foods by charging ridiculously high
sums for them. Buy "conventional" foods and
watch organic prices drop. Tags : hk hong kong china chinese milk soy soya wellcome supermarket economist price discrimination targeting shopping organic food |

[verse 1]
Roll up to the pump
Walking with a lean, station got a strong
odor so you know the gas is fresh
I'm smoother than a just paved street on this
track
Girls lookin over here cause they wanna hook
up
Turn your phone off it might cause an
explosion
I'm lookin in my pocket and I ain't got that
many green backs [nope]
Look up at the pump and then I picked which
grade
Regular, Premium, or Supreme no Diesel
Turn the pump on then I found my credit card
I'm Tha Ram up on this track, I got something
you never heard
Caught you at the counter with a 12 pack of
beer
Put it down on the floor and got a Pepsi
instead [Hell naw]
I was next up at the counter
The cashier said 60 dollars and I said
something ain't right
Baby don't play with me
I know this is for certain
Gas is way to high I think they got a phrase
for this
[{chorus}](2x)
They gouging(7x)
You know them boys
They gouging, that's wrong(3x)
Gas higher than a mu*fucka!

| Robotic Plasma Gouging and MIG Welding Cylindrical Stators |
 |
Here was our very first cell. We had to weld
these cylindrical stators (internal parts for
an electric motor) while they were being
clamped together by a hydraulic cylinder
pulling with 50,000lbs of force. The stators
weighed up to 2.5 tons, and diameter was
infinitely variable between 8" to 30", and up
to 50" high. First, we use laser sensors to
detect the height and diameter of the stator,
then we had to use plasma torches to gouge
notches in the cylinder, then used MIG
torches to weld them together. The reason
for the welds to be vertical was that these
stators (up to 30" in diameter and up to 50"
tall) were made up of rings of metal (more
like disks I guess) that were about 1/32"
thick and were stacked up to make the full
height of the stator. Tags : robot robots stator welding plasma torch dual laser sensor gouging MIG KUKA |
