| Guardsman Helps Hotel Guests Escape Fire |
 |
A National Guardsman is being credited with
helping dozens of people escape a fire at an
Independence hotel overnight.
Zac McMullen, 19, was driving on Noland Road
at about 4:30 a.m. when he saw lightning
strike a neon sign on top of the American
Inn. He stopped and alerted the front desk,
and then helped wake guests to get them out
of the hotel.
"I went up to the floor started banging on
doors, making sure people were getting out
because they're not going to know there's a
fire going on until it's too late," McMullen
told KMBC. "My adrenaline rush instinct
kicked in. (I thought) 'I've got to do it.'"
One of the guests stopped to thank McMullen
for alerting his family.
"I appreciate it. Me and my wife, everybody
here -- thanks," the guest told McMullen.
"I couldn't shake his hand enough. I couldn't
shake his hand enough for a scary moment like
that," the guest told KMBC.
No one was injured in the hotel fire.
KMBC's Maria Antonia reported that McMullen
enlisted with the National Guard in January.
He hasn't gone through basic training yet. Tags : KMBC Independence Missouri guardsman motel fire |
