| Hearing on Oil Profits and Subsidies: Inslee's Questions |

The Select Committee on Energy Independence
and Global Warming holds a hearing, "Drilling
for Answers on Oil and Gas Prices, Profits,
and Alternatives." Top-level executives from
the five largest oil companies will discuss
the current state of oil and gas prices, oil
company profits, and the need for clean,
renewable fuels to ease demand for oil and
cut global warming pollution. The Select
Committee will hear from the number two
officers worldwide for the three United
States-based oil companies and the presidents
of U.S. operations for the foreign companies.
ExxonMobil reported record profits of $40.6
billion in 2007, and the other top four oil
companies like BP and Shell made billions
more. These same companies are fighting to
keep $18 billion in tax breaks that Congress
is attempting to shift towards renewable
energy incentives for wind, solar, biomass
and other climate-friendly sources. The House
recently passed the Renewable Energy and
Energy Conservation Tax Act of 2008, but
President Bush and the top oil companies are
fighting to defeat the measure in the Senate.
Rep. Jay Inslee questions the executives.

Breaking news, The Associated Press is
reporting that the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco and Firearms has disrupted an alleged
plot to assassinate Barack Obama.
The Democratic Party's nominee for President
is leading in many polls and is expected to
win the White House on Nov. 4.
AP reports that court records, unsealed
Monday, point to a plan by two neo-Nazi
skinheads to shoot or decapitate 102 black
people in a Tennessee murder spree.

Agents said they disrupted plans to rob a gun
store and target an unnamed but predominantly
African-American high school.
Jim Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the
Nashville field office for the Bureau of
Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives,
said the two men planned to shoot 88 black
people and decapitate another 14. The numbers
88 and 14 are symbolic in the white
supremacist community.
Reuters reports that the two men "wanted to
go to a place where they could shoot as many
non-Caucasian as they could," according to
anonymous quote from an official source.
It's not the first time authorities have
broken up a group intent on assassinating Mr.
Obama. Three Denver-area men were arrested on
the eve of the August, 2008, Democratic
nominating convention in Colorado. The men
were said to have a plan "more aspirational
than operational." "We don't know if this was
a serious plot or some
methamphetamine-induced racist babbling or
what," said Brian Jenkins, senior adviser on
counterterrorism with the Rand Corporation.
Arkansas television station KAIT has this
report on the more recent plot, in which it
names the suspects:
ATF Arrests Arkansas, Tennessee Men in Plot
to Kill Obama
Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tennessee and
Paul Schlesselman, 18, of West Helena were
charged in a federal complaint last Friday of
illegal possession of a sawed-off shotgun,
conspiracy to rob a federal firearms
licensee, and making threats against a major
candidate for the Office of President.
According to the complaint, Cowart and
Schlesselman met via the Internet through a
mutual friend last month, with both men
claiming to have very strong beliefs
regarding "White Power" and "Skinhead"
philosophies.
On October 20, 2008, Cowart allegedly
travelled from Tennessee to Arkansas to pick
up Schlesselman in order to carry out their
plan.
Officials alleged Cowart and Schlesselman
stated that they would be willing to die
during their attempt.
The pair was arrested on October 22, 2008 by
the Crockett County, Tennessee Sheriff's
Department.
Cowart and Schlesselman appeared in court
Monday, and are scheduled to appear again at
a detention hearing on October 30th.
Circling back to the 14/88 stuff, Wikipedia
and Urban Dictionary seem to agree that 14/88
has significance to white supremacists in the
following ways:
"14" representing 14 words written by David
Lane (founding member of the white
nationalist group "The Order"), "We must
secure the existence of our people and a
future for white children."
That slogan was apparently inspired by a
statement, 88 words in length, quoted from
Volume 1, Chapter 8 of Adolf Hitler's Mein
Kampf:
What we must fight for is to safeguard the
existence and reproduction of our race and
our people, the sustenance of our children
and the purity of our blood, the freedom and
independence of the fatherland, so that our
people may mature for the fulfillment of the
mission allotted it by the creator of the
universe. Every thought and every idea, every
doctrine and all knowledge, must serve this
purpose. And everything must be examined from
this point of view and used or rejected
according to its utility.
It can be combined with 88, as in 14/88 or
1488. The 8s stand for the eighth letter of
the alphabet (H), with HH standing for Heil
Hitler. 88 can also stand for the book 88
Precepts by David Lane.
