| iShowU HD: Review |
 |
So after the painfully long wait (it was for
me anyway) iShowU HD is out and available to
download.

Obviously since I am limited to 10 minutes
here on YouTube I was talking faster (and
subsequently tripping over my own words more)
as well as not including everything I wanted
to talk about so I will discuss that here.
The criticisms I have pale in comparison to
this new version of iShowU as a whole,
however there are still two major things that
are keeping me from using it as my main
screen recording device (my main is
ScreenFlow).
1) I noticed that after I recorded a few
videos and after they had been compressed the
file sizes were REALLY LARGE. I had this
problem with the original iShowU as well,
videos I would record that were a mere 16
seconds would be about 40 MB. Sure that
sounds little but think of recording a video
that is 10 minutes. The file sizes of the
original iShowU could be as large as 5 gigs,
which forced me to dump those files into
iMovie HD and recompress them, and the same
thing is still happening with iShowU HD.
BUT.....I personally chalk this criticism up
to myself knowing squat about video editing.
I assume I am compressing the video wrongly
and for all I know when you load a video from
iShowU HD directly to YouTube you get a crazy
compression that looks freakin' great. So
before you come with pitchforks screaming,
"Eugene you are COMPRESZZING it wrong!" I
just wanted you to know that I am aware (if
that is the case).
2) This is the biggest reason why I still
prefer ScreenFlow. EDITING. Not everyone is a
video editor (I certainly am not) and simple
effects such as dim out a window, zooming in
and highlighting something can be pretty hard
for people (especially younger people or
inexpereinced people who have little
knowledge of what they are doing...myself
included). ScreenFlow is one of those
applications that gives you a milk bottle and
brushes your hair this way, it allows
painfully easy things such as a simple zoom,
literally point and click controls as well as
a nice a simple interface. Now I am not
saying iShowU HD cannot do that, but at the
same time I am. It seems that whoever (Neil,
I think) programmed iShowU HD was more about
getting the image to look nice (and it does
look damn nice) rather than caring about
editing. Maybe it was just me not looking on
how to edit in iShowU HD (if you can) but
either way ScreenFlow still wins in this
department.
Overall this app is CRAZY AWESOME. As I said
I highly recommend it, and a huge thanks to
anyone who helped develop, advertise, and
anything else I cannot think of. Tags : mac apple osx ishowu hd review |

Task:
Here at Mac App Training we have been using
iShowU Version 1 this year for our screen
capture production. Shinywhitebox recently
released an updated version of their Mac
screen capture software, iShowU HD and iShowU
HD Pro. We have since upgraded to iShowU HD
Pro and have been completely impressed with
the new version. We decided to stress test
the performance of the two applications.
Setup:
Mac Pro 8-core (Early 2008)
2 x 2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB PCIe 16x Video Card
Apple 23-inch Cinema Display (tested at
1920x1080 resolution)
320GB Boot Drive (Apple Stock)
160GB External 5400RPM 2.5-inch Firewire 800
Capture Drive
Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.5
iShowU Version 1.68
iShowU HD Pro Version 2.0.3
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Mac)
Process:
We werent looking to optimize the performance
of 3D games while screen capturing. We
wanted to stress test the CPU and graphics
card while capturing a 3D game. We ran Call
of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Mac for our
test. We made no adjustments to the graphics
settings for screen capturing. Remember, we
wanted to stress the CPU and GPU while screen
capturing. To further stress the system, we
left the resolution of the game and the
screen at 1920x1080. Our video capture
settings we also stressed. We chose to
screen capture the full 1920x1080 resolution
with the Apple ProRes 422 Codec at 30P frames
per second. We enabled the frames per second
overlay via the console in Call of Duty 4 to
display the performance of the game in the
upper right corner of the screen. Our system
runs Call of Duty 4 on these exact settings.
It runs at a consistent average of 60 frames
per second. Keep in mind that a PlayStation
3 runs Call of Duty 4 at a consistent 60
frames per second at a 720P maximum
resolution. We are running the game at a
full 1080P resolution here.
Results:
View our video above. Our results show that
iShowU HD Pro does screen capture a steady
50% more frames per second than the previous
version of iShowU. You may notice that the
audio beings scrambling in the video. The
audio intermittently dropped while testing
the iShowU Version 1 in this test. Also of
note, the iShowU Version 1 gameplay was
jittery. It is hard to tell from the video
but the iShowU Version 1 gaming wasnt smooth,
it was hard to be in the game with the
dropouts. iShowU HD Pro gameplay was very
smooth. The frames did drop to around 30
frames per second at times, but it wasnt too
noticeable during gameplay. The audio was
consistent throughout. The performance was
definitely not as smooth as playing while not
screen capturing. During normal gameplay we
typically achieve 60-90 frames per second at
the same exact settings. The frames per
second show an improvement. What isnt
clearly seen like previously mentioned is
that the game was not running smooth enough
to be playable with iShowU Version 1. At the
end of the day, we have concluded that the
new iShowU HD Pro is a great improvement for
graphic and CPU intensive application screen
capturing. We would recommend an upgrade for
any consumer or professional user of iShowU.
Professionals should highly consider the
iShowU HD Pro version. Visit the
shinywhitebox website to compare the iShowU
editions.
