| Malalma - Porro. Manu Chao night. |

Malalma from Bogotá play secret Manu Chao
after-party squat gig
Manu was in London to do Later and it
appeared he had been invited to visit a large
Spanish/Latin American squat on ??????, SE15.
As i live in SE15 the PR mentioned to me i
might like to drop in. Amazing space. Not a
house but an actual piece of land with large
locked steel gates at the front running
alongside a railway bridge with what must
have been once a block of flats. In one of
the spaces they have a stage and bar - really
nice space. I used to go to a lot of squats
in the early 90s but this is definitely the
most together (and largest) I've ever seen.
The band playing when i was there was a bit
like the band who opened for MC at Brixton -
homage/imiatation, lots of dreads and Che
T-shirts. Yes, it would be easy to send up
Manu's fans. Apparently the people who run
the squat introduced themselves to Manu when
he was in Brixton and he promised to come
along. I heard someone ask as to whether he
would sing and he suggested he wasn't up to
it but i didn't stay late so who knows - MC
rocking a SE15 squat, the stuff of legend!
Manu, as ever, was very relaxed and un-star
like. So rare that you encounter a famous
entertainer who doesn't hide from or feel
superior to their public.
