| Indian Shopping Malls Deserted |
 |
CHAN:
We have news coming out of India for you. The
country has been on alert since last
Saturday's string of bomb attacks. Security
is tight leaving the country's public places
and shopping malls deserted.
STORY:
Shopping malls and market places are deserted
in Ahmedabad. This comes after 16 bombs
ripped the city last Saturday.
The attack came just one day after a bomb
exploded in Bangalore.
Locals say authorities haven't done enough to
stop terrorist attacks. So now, mall security
personnel are taking no chances and are
searching all customers.
[Anshu Mathur, Mall Manager]:
"After the bomb blast, we had (are)
physically frisking each and every customer
that (who) is walking in. Besides this, in
the basements where we have two-wheeler and
four-wheeler parking, we are checking every
compartment of any vehicle that is coming
in."
But shopkeepers complain all the searches
keep customers at bay. Business has been
paralyzed over the past few days.
[Jagdish Purohit, Businessman]:
"It has affected a lot and 65-75% (of)
business has gone down because of this.
People are afraid to come to the public
places right now."
After the blasts, police recovered more than
twenty unexploded bombs in the industrial
city of Surat.
All cities in India are on alert, with extra
police stationed at malls, train stations and
temples.
A group calling itself the "Indian
Mujahideen" claimed responsibility for the
Ahmedabad attack. They sent an e-mail five
minutes before the first blast saying the
attack is in revenge for the 2002 Gujarat
Massacre-where 2,500 Muslims were attacked by
Hindu mobs. Tags : ntd ntdtv news indian shopping malls deserted ahmedabad places bomb india attack anshu business mathur besides |

EPISODE 075 - MALLS (HANGOUTS)
Pre-empted Show: The A-Team Makes One Cup Of
Coffee Last 5 Hours
As the gang spends the entire show just
hanging out and doing nothing, Alasdair makes
money as a street musician with Ross as his
manager.
Production: Hung Out To Dry
DID YOU NOTICE?
* Ross emphasized that Adam needed a cold
shower for hanging around Moose's dressing
room. When Adam said he "didn't want to mess
up his hair with water" and the water fell,
it had ice cubes in it, which was a cold
shower indeed.

| Watching old friends fade away...dying malls. |
 |
This video in no way condemns or critcizes
the owners or tenants of the included
properties. I am providing these views for
those that have left the area, and those who
may have the capital or interest to
revitalize them. The malls shown are Rolling
Acres (and some of its outparcels) in Akron,
Ohio, Randall Park Mall in Cleveland, Ohio,
Montgomery Ward in Cuyahoga Falls and Euclid
Square Mall in Euclid, Ohio (a suburb of
Cleveland.)
As shopping habits change, the way shopping
centers are designed changes. Initially open
air plazas were in vogue, replaced by
enclosed shopping malls...which are now being
replaced by open air "lifestyle centers".
Unfortunately, these changes in habits and
design often leave much in terms of retail
blight.
These are just a handful of malls in
Northeastern Ohio, but the situation of
decaying malls exists all over the USA. Some
communities have come up with unique ways of
utilizing the space, while others just close
the malls down or bulldoze them. As with most
buildings that are demolished, much local
history and innovative architecture are lost.
Design of shopping malls in the 1970s had a
definite vibe to it, organic and modern at
the same time. Randall Park Mall in
particular showcases some Frank Lloyd
Wright-esque design touches.
Like I said, I am not placing these images
online to condemn the owners, but perhaps to
inspire others to step forward and help
breathe new life into the centers. A friend
of mine always tells me "the most dangerous
time in the lifespan of a building is between
its loss of popularity and the realization
that it is cultural history."
Please comment, and let me know what you
think. The Pretenders provide a fitting
musical soundtrack (special thanks to mp for
selecting it.) For more information on malls
in decline, check the website
