| Carmen - Royal Opera House |
 |
The Spanish heat and gypsy passion of Carmen
take to the stage as The Royal Opera presents
the first revival of Francesca Zambello's
vibrant production with Tanya McCallin's
richly coloured designs. It's a great stage
recreation of the sun-drenched and sultry
world of 19th-century Spain, with its ranks
of soldiers and crowds of peasants, its
gypsies and bullfighters, its spectacle and
its deadly, white-hot emotions. Star tenor
Marcelo Álvarez is Don José, the soldier
she forces to murderous jealousy over her new
affair with the bullfighter Escamillo, played
by Kyle Ketelsen. It's a perfect cast to
bring alive the sexy solos, rousing choruses,
impassioned arias and Spanish dances of one
of the most famously tuneful of all operas
and one of the most enduringly popular works
in the entire repertory.

| Sleeping Beauty - Royal Opera House |
 |
The Sleeping Beauty is one of the most-loved
of classical ballets, combining in a single
work all the charms and virtuosity that
ballet has to offer. Favourite highlights of
music and dance run through it, and include
Tchaikovsky's famous and lyrical Waltz and
the Rose Adage as Aurora meets in turn her
four princely suitors. This famous staging
was created for the The Royal Ballet in 1946,
and revived for the 75th anniversary
celebrations of Company in 2006. Luscious
designs bring to life the royal court, the
panoramic journey of the Prince to the
overgrown castle and the great celebratory
dances (including other famous figures from
fairytale) of the happy ending. A great
showcase for the Company's talents and a
living milestone in its history, this
Sleeping Beauty's style and visual splendour
are unique to The Royal Ballet.

| Sylvia - Royal Opera House |
 |
Ashton's Sylvia was restored to the splendour
of its elegant and opulent three-act form for
the 75th anniversary celebrations of The
Royal Ballet and it is now firmly back in the
Company's repertory. Its story, from Greek
myth, tells of Sylvia, whose vows of chastity
mean she cannot return the love of the
shepherd Aminta. Eros, up to his tricks,
intervenes, only to see Sylvia abducted by
the hunter Orion. Rescuing her, Eros finally
brings the lovers together.
Ashton was inspired by the music of Leo
Délibes to create such great choreographic
sequences as the famous Act III pas de deux
and the role of the mischievous Eros, one of
those delightful, darkly comic
characterisations for which Ashton became
known and loved. With Margot Fonteyn as his
original Sylvia, Ashton made the title role a
wonderful showcase for virtuosity, invention
and classical beauty. And it is indeed a
beautiful ballet to look at -- the epitome of
Ashton style in stage settings of great
detail and painterly splendour.
