| Nicolas Sarkozy angry at TV Nikola Sarkozi France president |
 |
A film of a tense and tough Nicolas Sarkozy,
recorded without his knowledge before an
interview on France's EU presidency.
REUTERS
President Nicolas Sarkozy makes a point
during a French prime time news programme
where he speaks about France's EU presidency.
Clearly ruffled after just driving past staff
protesting his plan to personally nominate
public television's head, Mr Sarkozy hit out
at a technician who failed to reply when he
said "hello" when placing his microphone.
"It's a matter of upbringing," he told the
man. "When you're a guest you have the right
to expect a hello... Or we're not in the
public service here, we are at a
demonstration ... incredible... and serious."
"That's going to change," he added
menacingly.
He then turned to one of the interviewers,
Gérard Leclerc, asking him in the informal
"tu" form "How long did you spend in Siberia
(in the closet in French)?" -- apparently
referring to the journalist not having been
given an on-camera role for a while.
"I wasn't in favour," he added.
Full of nervous ticks, the impatient
president tapped his fingers and played with
his Patek Philippe watch -- a present from
his wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy -- asking
whether the studio clock is working.
The unedited pictures of Mr Sarkozy were
clearly released by irate France 3 staff,
although unions denied this.
Later during Monday's broadcast interview, Mr
Sarkozy laid into France Télévisions, the
public broadcasting company, accusing it of
trying to copy private channels instead of
daring to show theatre, or more educational
programmes.
But detractors said he was dragging France
back its post-war propaganda years. There is
also discontent at France Télévisions over
his decision to remove adverts in the evening
without apparently compensating it for the
loss of revenue.
