| Dissidents Denounce Burma Referendum |
 |
ANCHOR:
Also in Burma, amidst a humanitarian crisis
and a constitutional referendum this weekend,
a group of exiled Burmese monks gathered in
Thailand to voice their opposition to the
referendum and the new constitution. Here's
more:
STORY:
Seventeen exiled Burmese monks gathered on
Saturday (May 10) to speak about their
opposition to Saturday's referendum. The
Burmese military junta is hoping voters will
vote "yes" and approve the new constitution,
which gives the junta a legal mandate.
[Upanna Jawta, All Burma Monk Alliance]:
"The government tries to control and force
its people to vote in favour of the
constitution. They are barring the media and
international monitors from observing the
referendum. The whole process has been
planned to pass the constitution."
Even before the cyclone, groups opposed to
military rule, and foreign governments led by
the United States, had denounced the vote as
the military's attempt to legitimize its grip
on power.
And while it was the first election in Burma
in nearly two decades, the voters were under
orders to vote "yes."
The army-run media had pumped out a
propaganda-blitz in the run-up to the vote,
telling the Burmese people it was their
"patriotic duty" to approve the charter.
[Unnamed Burmese Voter, Mae Sot, Thailand]:
"Yes, I voted in favor, to pass the
constitution."
Meanwhile, voting was delayed in only the
worst-affected areas of Burma. But delay or
not, many say they feel they have no choice
but to vote yes. Tags : ntd dissidents burma crisis exiles monks thailand referendum |

referendum on the state's extremist
anti-abortion ban. We spoke at length with
one of the prominent voices in the public
debate over the issue: Bill Fleming from
Mount Blogmore.
Bill walks us through the back-story of the
abortion law in South Dakota and how the ban
has changed the political landscape of South
Dakota. Tags : bill fleming mount blogmore south dakota abortion referendum |

| Scotland: The referendum at the spotlight (Basque subtitles) |
 |
It has gone a year since the Scottish
National Party won the elections in Scotland
and they announced they will organize an
independence referendum. We have talked to
the two main political parties (SNP and the
Scottish Labour Party) and we have rebuilt
the national debate they are having on
independence. If there is something clear, is
that the at least the atmosphere, is warming
up.
