Another factor in developing good piano
fingering skills involves being able to play
without always relying on looking at your
fingers. In fact, in order to read music
notation (which we won't be doing right now),
your eyes will constantly be focused away
from your hands. So what we're going to do
here today is learn my own "simplified"
method of sight-reading. And there's only so
much we can cover in this brief video lesson.

PLEASE NOTE: YouTube rejected Part One of
this lesson because it is over 11 minutes
long, (But you can still watch it by going to
my myspace page or just click on the link
below to my website). So, now that we've
warmed up our left hand with some basic
sight-reading drills, let's start practicing
a set of 15-note finger charts and play them
both forward and backwards! If you perform
these exercises properly without peeking at
your fingers, you'll get a terrific piano
lesson in "hand-eye coordination" that will
sharpen your sight-reading skills and
ultimately help increase your playing ability
on the keyboard. Catch the complete piano

Alexander Hunt (Aj) practicing some sight
reading with his teacher Matthew McAllister.
The piece is Joseph Küffner's 'Andantino'.
During the lesson we were working on getting
Aj to keep a nice even pulse and steady
tempo, resisting the temptation speed up and
slow down randomly and adding a little gentle
rubato at the end.
Aj recently passed his grade 2 and there are
more performances from him in Matthew's
Student Playlist. Tags :AlexanderHuntClassicalGuitarJosephKüffnerDuoAndantinoSightReadingPractice
