MS. ZHANG: Where do you want to go
sightseeing today?
MS. PHILLIPS: I want to visit this temple
I've read about in the guide book.
MS. ZHANG: OK, but I will buy the entrance
ticket.
MS. PHILLIPS: Oh, I didn't realize we have to
pay to get in.
MR. ZHANG: Yes, in China, there is a small
fee to enter museums, parks and temples.
MS. PHILLIPS: That's very different from back
home . Have you ever heard of anyone paying
to go to church?
MR. ZHANG: You're right. In the West you
don't make a direct payment at the entrance
but the congregation is usually expected to
make a contribution during collection .
MS. PHILLIPS: Oh, you've been to England
before?
MR. ZHANG: Yes I went there last year. I had
the time of my life , although it took a few
days to adjust. The two cultures are so
different.
MS. PHILLIPS: Well, this is my first visit to
China. And I've heard this temple is amazing.
When was it built?
MR. ZHANG: Pretty recently. About 150 years
ago.
MS. PHILLIPS: Well that seems very old to me.
MR. ZHANG: Considering China's 5000 year
history it's relatively new!
MS. PHILLIPS: Do you go to that temple?
MR. ZHANG: No, but my parents do.
MS. PHILLIPS: To pray ?
MR. ZHANG: No. Nowadays people just come to
pray for good luck and money.
MS. PHILLIPS: A similar trend is occurring in
the West especially in regard to festivals.
Many people still celebrate Christmas,
although they might not be churchgoers .
MR. ZHANG: Yes, it's interesting. We should
find a taxi and go .
