"TOWARD THE LAND OF SMOKE AND SCREAMS" 2008
Campo San Bortolomeo, Venice 25-27.01.2008
public art project conceived for the
municipal observance of "Remembrance Day"
-video projection and sound piece, one video
projector, five acoustic speakers will be
placed on the balcony of the office of the
Notarial Council of Venice. This office is on
the first floor of a building in San
Bartolomeo square, facing the back of the
church bearing the same name. A video,
composed of an alternating double slide show,
will be projected on the wall of the church,
while the sound emitted by the five
downward-facing speakers will be discernible
to the passersby below. The public
intervention will take place on Friday 25,
Saturday 26 and Sunday 27, 2008, from 5:00 pm
to 02:00 am. The video is composed of the
alternation of a dozen or so photographic
images of symbols sewn onto the clothing of
Nazi concentration camps interns. The audio
consists of musical scores from Die
Ermittlung (Preliminary Investigation),
composed by Luigi Nono as the stage music for
Peter Weiss' theatre piece of the same name.
-Posting of 200 posters, throughout the
municipal area, depicting a patchwork of
combined images of the symbols used in the
projections
-Distribution of 5000 postcards bearing the
same images as the poster with a text by Gadi
Luzzato Voghera on the back.
Pieces of cloth, sewn or embroidered, form
six-pointed stars for Jews or simple
isosceles triangles, whose different colours
indicated homosexuals, Communists, the
gypsies or prostitutes.
These symbols are crucial elements of the
public art project "Toward the Land of Smoke
and Screams".
Through Internet research, I found dozens of
high-resolution colour photographs of scraps
of cloth and armbands bearing these symbols.
In the documentary photographs and black and
white film of the Shoah and the persecution
of certain minorities, the Star of David and
the triangle are barely recognizable on the
clothing of the ghettos and on the loose
shirts of the concentration camp inmates
Seeing them in their original colours, in
high-resolution photographs, revealing the
details of the weave of the threadbare but
resistant cloth, the intense colours,
embroidered or sewn carefully by hand, they
at first appear somehow fascinating.
This sensation is immediately followed by a
deep sense of bewilderment when, observing
these artifacts carefully in detail, we
realize, almost physically like a blow to the
stomach, the appalling atrocity which
produced them.
"Toward the Land of Smoke and Screams" thus
originates from the feeling provoked by the
close-up, defined, "tactile" vision of these
"relics", now sold on eBay, with the aim of
instigating reflection on the fascination and
attraction that racist, discriminatory and
xenophobic ideas have always exercised on an
ever-growing number of people.
The symbols, used as readymades in a minimal
yet powerful allegory of the effects of
absolute evil, rife in Europe just a few
decades ago, are simply
reproposed-reassembled, in three contexts: -
randomly matched in dozens like a patchwork
quilt and used as posters fixed throughout
the municipality of Venice -combined in pairs
on the front of postcards upon which a text
by professor Gadi Luzzato appears on the
back.
-in the form of a double slideshow projected
in Campo San Bartolomeo, together with the
sound installation of musical scores from Die
Ermittlung (The Inquiry), composed by Luigi
Nono
It is a contemporary artwork, and
specifically a public art project, conceived
of as a communicative "street-style"
marketing operation (public distribution of
postcards, posting of hundreds of posters,
video projections in the most frequented spot
in Venice), aimed at visually attracting the
potential "consumer", only to surprise him or
her, when after just a few moments, he or she
realizes the implication of the symbols. If
the operation is effective, it will generate
reflection, if even just for a moment, on
these "Stars and triangles" which, as Gadi
Luzzato wrote, "are not black and white, thus
not a part of past history, but are a
coloured patchwork of contemporary memory".

KONULU FOTOĞRAF SERGİSİ"
"2007 Yılının UNESCO tarafından
Dünya Mevlana Huzur ve Sevgi yılı ilan
edilmesi nedeniyle, kültürümüzün daha
iyi tanınması ve insanlarımızın huzur ve
sevgi dolu bir yaşamda anlam bulabilmeleri
için, Şair ve Fotoğraf Sanatçısı Can
AKIN tarafından çekilen, Mevlana "TÖREN"
Fotoğrafları İzmir - Urla Hakan Çeken
Kültür Merkezinde 30 Kasım-10 Aralık
tarihlerinde sergilenecektir" şeklinde
hazırlanan basın bülteniyle davet
sonucunda:
30.10.2007 günü saat 18:00
sıralarında İzmir ili Urla ilçesinde
bulunan Hakan Çeken Kültür Merkezi'nde
'Can Akın Mevlana Konulu Fotoğraf Sergisi'
açılışı yapıldı. Açılış öncesi
Can Akın'ın Urla için yazdığı 'Senden
Öğrendim' adlı şiir okundu, Vali Muavini
Mustafa Aydın tarafından ve Urla
Kaymakam'ı Şahin Bayhan tarafından kurdele
kesilmek sureti ile açılış gerçekleşti.
Sergide 2005 yılında Konya
Mevlana Kültür Merkezi'nde çekilen 64 adet
Sema Tören fotoğrafları gösterildi. Bu
fotoğraflar daha önceden Fransa, Almanya,
Hollanda, Belçika, Lüksemburg'da dijital
ortamda perdeye yansıtmak sureti ile özel
toplantılarda gösterimde bulunulduğu,
Türkiye'de ise 8 ay içerisinde İstanbul,
Giresun, Zonguldak, Ankara (5), Muğla,
İzmir illerinde 10. fotoğraf sergisi
açtığı, 100.000'ne yakın kişinin bu
sergileri ziyaret ettiğini anlatıldı,
sergi ilgi ile izlendi.
Sergi sonunda, Mevlana hakkında
söyleşi ve Sema Törenleri için konferans
salonuna geçildi. Türk Bayrağı taşıyan
bir öğrenci salonun ortasına gelerek
Şehitlerimiz için saygı duruşu ve
ardından İstiklal Marşı okundu, İstiklal
Marşı esnasında Vali Muavini Mustafa
Aydın, Kaymakam Şahin Bayhan, törene
katılan Daire Amirleri ve Urla halkı
yüksek ses ile coşkulu bir şekilde
İstiklal Marşı'nı okudu ve açılışa
kutlama mesajları gönderen T.B.M.M Bakanı

Mevlana' şiiri okundu, Can Akın'a Vali
Muavini Mustafa Aydın Tarafından bir şilt
verildi, Can Akın tarafından da Mevlana
fotoğraflarını sergilemesine yardım eden
Urla Kaymakam'ı Şahin Bayhan'a, bir şilt
verildi,
Ardından Ege Üniversitesi
Semazen grubu tarafından getirilen
Semazenler eşliğinde gösteriye devam
edildi. Hakan Çeken Kültür Merkezinin bin
kişilik konferans salonunun yapılış ve
dizaynı kırmızı renk hakim olduğundan
semazenlerin beyaz renkli Mevlevi
kıyafetleri ve ses düzeninin yeni sistem
olması nedeniyle gelen misafirler
gösteriden etkilenmişler Gösteri sonunda
alkışlar eşliğinde sona ermiştir.
